    Wort Chilling in kettle

Hello, So, I haven't committed to a wort chiller yet (cleaning equipment is already hard enough in my tiny house) and I had an idea yesterday and wondering if anyone has ever tried this. I have an 8 gallon boil kettle that I usually let sit in an ice water bath in my sink. I usually have...

    Bacteria growth?

Hey all, I kind of hijacked one of my own threads with a new question and didn't really get a response, so I wanted to post a new thread. I racked my Weizenbock to the secondary, and I have a kind of "mold looking collection" on the surface of the beer. It's hard to see in the pictures...

Weizenbock to Seconday - ABV seems off

Okay, updating with pics... Here is the Weizenbock in the secondary: And here is the bubbles thing. It's hard to see (in the pictures, it still does look a little like mold)but they are a collection of bubbles. Also, I noticed that is smells unusually fruity...

Weizenbock to Seconday - ABV seems off

Update on my Weizenbock.. So, I went out last night, and when I came home, I took a look at the beer in the secondary, and it looked like mold was growing on the top of it. I was super upset, as I've NEVER had an issue with sanitation/infection before. This morning, I looked again, and on...

When did you become a home brewer?

Two years ago for me. I was 30, and told my wife that it would be cool to try making my own beer. I'm the kind of person who starts a hobby, and then drops it after a few months. Knowing this, my wife got me a Mr. Beer kit for my birthday. I did a couple batches of Mr. Beer, and then...

Weizenbock to Seconday - ABV seems off

Do you have this problem measuring in a thief? Maybe it's my hydrometer? It looks like the ballast weight on the bottom may be a little crooked (see link for pic).

Weizenbock to Seconday - ABV seems off

Hey all, I've had my Weizenbock in the primary for 11 days. Last night, I racked to the secondary, and took a hydro reading, which came out about 1.009. My OG was only 1.040, which puts me at an ABV of just over 4%. This seems really low, especially since bocks are usually bigger beers...

    Final Gravity too low?

Brewers friend tells me your ABV is right around 6.3%... that sounds good to me for a Saison.

More than 1 type of Star San?

Hello all, I just stopped by my LHBS and picked up some Star San (first time using it). I've read Ad Nauseum that this stuff is no rinse (and the bottle mentions it in the directions), however, there are warning labels that it's not safe if it gets in your eyes, if it is swallowed, or if...

    Bottling an Apfelwein

No, I used 5g of Lalvin EC-1118 wine yeast, as it is what my LHBS had. I plan on letting it sit for 3 months in my BB. I will make sure to tuck some away after bottling so it can sit for awhile, but my SO loves apfelwein, so I'm sure it wont last that long!

    Bottling an Apfelwein

Thanks a ton for the link! I did follow the recipe to the T, except for the yeast. I used Lalvin EC-1118 (5g) wine yeast, as that is what my LHBS had. I didn't see an Apfelwein on the calculator, so I used the standard cider and perry option. It's giving me a recommendation of 3.8oz, so...
