Started getting the urge to start brewing again. Amazing how little time you have after kids are born.
Anyways, keezer that I use also for temp control has since been moved to the basement for more garage space. I brew in the attached garage on a gas fired herms.
I'm thinking I'd like to run to...
Of all the homebrew equipment I've purchased. The Barley Crusher is the only one I regret. Time is limited and having it intermittently crushing with endless manipulation..... hobbies should be fun.... Poorly manufactered JUNK. Any recommendations on a quality grain crusher?
I agree, sick of my ball locks. To many places for leaks to occur. Slowly converting to sanke.... Besides fermenting in half barrel (15.5 Gallons) fits perfect in 50L (13.2 gallon). No more cleaning multiple kegs for big batches!
And picnic taps become an an option if you have a gas issue.
I just went through the same thing about a month ago!
Thought I could use the 10g rubbermaid, with my newly constructed herms brew rig. Could not get flow no matter what i did, knocked the manifold off its connection inside the cooler. Got to scoop all 24 lbs of heated grain out to reset...
Lately I have been thinking about a brewery up grade and making a stand probably with some automation. I have access to welders however I think my brew stand may have some trial and error. I feel more comfortable screwing materials together instead of welding, in case modification may be needed...
IMO, drew does have a point. If time and money are scarce, but it is up to the brewer. I like to use Mr.Malty as a guideline. Making a starter and getting half way to where one should be is still better then not making a starter at all. If the time is available I attempt the correct pitching...
Saw this forum pop up again on my subscribed and would like to propose a suggestion.
There is a park in Stratford, Booth Memorial. Perhaps arrange a date to meet in the spring? Grab a picnic table or two and share some brew. There is plenty of space, I know of other clubs that use the facility...
Fermenting five gallons in a five gallon carboy can be done. Just requires a blow off tube until fermentation slows. I used to do it before I got more buckets and a sanke.
I have brewed in my basement multiple times with a co detector and have found higher co levels in my kitchen when using the stove. Only got up to I think 60 ppm. I still open the door periodically. It's nice not having wind affect burner and having the washing machine connections close by for...
I also use the paper funnel method, ussually a magazine or piece of news paper.
To mix the dme I've been putting it on the stir plate before boil then move it to the heat when it looks mixed.
I just started using fermcap and am impressed. It really cut down the mess.
