    Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier Clone???

Has anyone used the Wyeast 3638 (WLP 351) instead of the Wyeast 3068 (WLP 300) with this same recipe? I've been trying for a Julius Echter clone and my next step is to try the WLP 351. I recently tried the Weihenstephan and it tasted a lot like Julius Echter, but the bottle said Bavarian Weizen...

    Secondary in plastic; anti-oxidation ideas?

If you keg, use a CO2 line to purge the oxygen from the bucket. A few seconds at 10-12 psi should do the trick. I use this same method when kegging by putting the gas on the beer out post for a few seconds with the lid off.

Does this yeast starter look OK to you?

White Labs should include a small warning leaflet with that strain! A first timer with a weak heart might not survive the shock of finding swirling chunks in their starter!

Does this yeast starter look OK to you?

My starter of WLP002 English Ale looked exactly like that. I was pretty nervous until I went to the White Labs site and they listed flocculation as very high for that strain. That was my first time using an English strain.

    Second Batch, First Explosion

AHS - Blow Off Hose 1" Thick Wall This tubing will fit inside the neck of a 6.5gal glass carboy with an airtight fit. You need about 4 feet to get from the carboy neck to the sanitized jug. That sounds like a lot, but the tubing doesn't bend too easy since it is thick. Not sure if it...

WLP002 English Ale - Sour Smelling Starter?

Had a 1500mL starter of DME only at around 1.040 on the stirplate for about 24 hours with WLP002 English Ale. I just pitched it, but the starter had a sour-ish smell to it. Is that normal for WLP002? This was my first time to use this yeast. I'm pretty compulsive about sanitization and...

    Krausen when using a stirplate

This one is a bottle harvest that I stepped up to 1500mL, so I left it on the plate for a longer time. I haven't made a starter with the stirplate yet, but I'll keep the 12-24 hour timeframe in mind. Thanks!

    Krausen when using a stirplate

I'm new to stirplate use and I've seen a dark ring form on the flask right at the liquid line after a few days on the plate. Is this considered krausen when using a stirplate? Obviously the vortex wouldn't allow for the traditional layer of krausen that would normally form in a fermenter...

    Experimental IPA (Amarillo & Cascade)

I got 5oz of Cascade hops on the cheap and some Amarillo hops that I need to use. I was trying to create an IPA extract recipe based on the two. Any inputs or other recipe ideas are appreciated. Ingredients Amount Item Type % or IBU 4.00 lb Extra Light Dry Extract (3.0 SRM) Dry Extract...

BM's Blue Balls - Got the Blue, but where's the Balls?

I tasted a little today and the basics are there, just missing the orange flavor. I splashed a little OJ in the sample and it tasted great! I'm going to dump some of the vodka soaked bitter orange and then zest some sweet orange in vodka and add that. Hopefully, she'll turn out right for me.

BM's Blue Balls - Got the Blue, but where's the Balls?

Thanks for the heads up on the sweet/bitter zest. I'm trying to replicate the Blue Moon that my girlfriend enjoys, so it will really be up to her taste. She drinks regular Blue Moon with an orange slice squeezed in, so I'm guessing she would enjoy the sweet citrusy zest. I'll add in small...

BM's Blue Balls - Got the Blue, but where's the Balls?

Not stupid at all, but I did remember. I didn't rehydrate the orange peel prior to putting it in the boil, so that could be part of the problem. I took the remaining orange peel (.25oz) and started soaking them in vodka. I'll also try the zest suggestion. Any other ideas, keep 'em coming!

BM's Blue Balls - Got the Blue, but where's the Balls?

I've got it on 40psi at room temp for the time being. I may chill and check the taste in a week or so and go from there. I just read a post that said the orange flavor is actually from the coriander seed and not the orange peel. I'm still accepting suggestions though! I'll dry "hop" some...

BM's Blue Balls - Got the Blue, but where's the Balls?

So I brewed the PM version of BM's Blue Balls (Blue Moon clone). I hit the OG and FG perfectly (1.038 and 1.010), but the orange flavor is definitely not present in the sample I tasted going into the keg. Followed the recipe exactly including the fermentation schedule. Beer is perfect in...

    Canning starter wort

Just to be clear, wort stored in a refrigerator for a short time (1-2 weeks) is ok right? I normally do this for bottle cultivating yeast and feed them measured amounts at a time. I've put way too much time and money into brewing to die this soon in the process!
