Growing Hops: Soil Preparation & Composting With Spent Grains

Just curious - should the spent grains be dried before adding to a compost bin, or just out of the mash tun and into the compost bin? What about the break material in the kettle after the wort is transferred - compostable as well? What about the yeast/hop trub in the bottom of the fermenter...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

Nico93, How did you think Wy3463 did in this beer? I have made a few attempts at getting something close, but the yeast profile has always been off. I have been considering using WLP720 (based on info from the CSI clone), but have trouble getting WLP products here. At least Mr Malty suggests...

Estimating O2 exposure and number of purges needed

I have been struggling with this ever since the LoDo information started circulating. I have always struggled to make IPAs I was happy with, and eventually I decided that it was cold side oxygenation I was dealing with. I have typically done a double dry hop on my IPAs. What I did on my most...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Brewed it recently, has been in the keg a couple of weeks now, and turned out very nice. I think Evil Twin is probably a good approximate, or possibly Evil Dead Red from Alesmith; however, I don't get to try either of those very often so my memory may be a bit off. I will try to post more...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

I have been looking at this recipe for a long time, but think I might actually brew it this weekend (if I can get approval from SWMBO). Can anyone compare this recipe to any commercial examples? Just curious about what to expect. Thanks for putting this out there. JG

    Morebeer FerMonster

I almost ordered a Fermonster recently for these reasons (large size and clear to see fermentation progress). Does anyone know if morebeer is going to make a ported version of these? I called and asked about a month ago, and the person didn't really know. To me, the Speidel still has these...

    Interesting German Brewing PDF

I didn't find this mentioned in the thread or in the PDF, but if I missed it I apologize. What DO meter are you all using? I have been very interested in getting one, but have had trouble finding one at a reasonable price. Any recommendations? JG

    Hop stability- Bottling vs kegging

I've actualy thought before about attaching a CO2 balloon to my fermenter caps before, especially during cold crashing, but never actually put something like this together (and frankly thought myself a little crazy for considering it). I really like your set up! How much pressure are you...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

Very interested in your opinion of WY3463 vs WLP720. I brewed a version with WY3522 (Ardennes), that came out good, but the yeast character just didn't seem right. I brewed it again, but with 3463, and I have to say that my early impression is that this is not the right yeast at all, although it...

intentional oxidization of dry hopped beer

Well, I try to be careful to avoid O2 uptake during the process. Typically I have been doing two dry hop additions: the first in primary when fermentation is basically complete (not really ongoing) and then I transfer to a secondary where I dry hop a second time, then transfer into a keg. I...

intentional oxidization of dry hopped beer

Are you referring to hydrogen peroxide, like you can buy at a grocery store? I don't think I have any on hand, but can pick some up easily. Do you think this would be more effective than pure O2? Definitely let me know if you try it. I guess I am just trying to figure out what hop oxidation...

intentional oxidization of dry hopped beer

So I have had a long history of being disappointed with my dry hopped beers. They frequently have an unusual aroma that I have trouble describing, sort of like an odd hop sweetness, almost like a hop candy smell that is not really pleasant. I recently began to think that this aroma is a...

    Post Your Final Beer pH

Great thread! I have been focusing on water chemistry and mash pH over the last several batches, now that I have a good pH meter, and have found that it has really helped my beer. However, I have not been measuring pre/post boil pH or final beer pH, but this thread has inspired me to start...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel Karmeliet Clone

Hex - in regards to the orange peel you used, was it fresh peel, or the dried stuff you can buy in home brew shops? Or was it zest? Also, you used Wyeast forbidden fruit (3463) as well? Did you think your fermentation temps were about right for that yeast? I have been working on a clone...

Pomponianus: Sessioning down the Vinnie Pliny Recipe

Looks good overall. I wonder if the IBU might be a bit high. You have over a 2 BU:GU ratio - might move out of the "sessionable" range, especially for a diverse crowd of people. I might consider decreasing the 90 min colombus amount, and maybe moving it to 60 min to try to drop the IBUs...
