    Using Specialty Malts

Thanks for the recipe! I might try something similar and use yours as a base. The recipes I saw that used the darker crystal was for some lighter beers - a yuengling clone and a pale ale. Those are the type of beer I for too so we probably are pretty similar in taste. Maybe that's just my clue...

    Using Specialty Malts

Perfect. I'm sold - gonna send an email to them today for a quote. When you used the crystal, how much did you use and what darkness did you get? I saw quite a few recipes in the main section used around 6-8 oz crystal at 80L in a 5 gal batch and am thinking about doing the same.

    Using Specialty Malts

Sorry for the confusion! Yes, I'm referring to their crystal/vienna/munich/chateau abbey malts using millet, buckwheat or quinoa. Seems a lot of people prefer millet so I'd probably start with that. I've steeped roasted millet before but this seems like a better option. I'm just not willing to...

    Using Specialty Malts

There's been a lot of discussion lately about mashing CMC's malts but I'm just not ready to make that big of a leap in brewing. What I am considering is using some of their specialty malts to steep with and then using a sorghum/BRS base for my fermentables. But it doesn't seem like anyone has...

    Buckwheat Blonde Ale - Suggestions?

So yeah...not sure this is one I'd recommend. It's been nearly 2 weeks and the taste isn't very good. It's pretty sweet but doesn't taste sugary. The FG ended up around 1.01 so it's not like it should be crazy sweet. There's virtually no hop flavor in it either. I haven't bottled it yet but...

    Buckwheat Blonde Ale - Suggestions?

Well I brewed this recipe this afternoon with some tweaks. The final recipe is as follows: 3 gallon batch 1.5 lbs Brown Rice Syrup (at 60 mins) 6 oz D-45 Candi Syrup (at 60 mins) 1.5 lbs Sorghum Syrup (at flameout) 5 oz Buckwheat Honey (at flameout) 4 oz Maltodextrin (at flameout) 0.25 oz...

    Buckwheat Blonde Ale - Suggestions?

Well I ordered all my stuff online this morning. I did order the D45 candi syrup too. Hopefully I'll have it all to brew by the middle of next week. I decided to just do a full batch. Hopefully it'll be good and then I don't have to worry about saving half containers of syrup (am I lazy or...

    Buckwheat Blonde Ale - Suggestions?

Thanks for both the suggestions! I had used that brewtoad website and the hops came in at 25 IBU's. I didn't think that was crazy considering some of the IPA's I've seen are upwards of 40-60. I might skip that last hops addition or reduce it. It doesn't affect the IBU's but might be a bit much...

    Buckwheat Blonde Ale - Suggestions?

Hello all - I'd like to post a recipe I've cobbled together for a blonde ale and would love some feedback on it. I first tried brewing beer to little success about a year ago and switched over to wine. But lately I've been craving a nice easy drinking ale. So I started doing a little research...

    Golden Ale?

You were right! Even in a full day a bunch of sediment dropped out. So much that I decided to bottle just now. Taste is just ok - certainly drinkable but not what I'd like - I want more malty/caramel/bready taste. It was also hoppier than I was expecting but maybe that will mellow in the bottle...

    Golden Ale?

So far so good. The FG ended up being down around 1.005 which seems low for beers from what I've seen on here. Typical for my ciders though so I'm not too worried. I racked the beer into the secondary today after a week sitting in primary. The color seems nice but it's definitely not clear...

    Golden Ale?

Well I brewed this yesterday. I only did a small batch so I reduced everything accordingly. The OG was a little low for me at 1.04 so I added a bit more turbinado to get it up to 1.05. I also added some cascade hops after everything chilled down. We'll see how my first brew goes. It's...

    Bard's Homebrew Kit

Has anyone tried the Bard's Homebrew kit? It uses malted sorghum extract instead of just sorghum syrup. It's a little pricey - Midwest has it for $48 for a 5 gallon kit. http://www.midwestsupplies.com/bard-s-homebrew.html I'm also curious - if this kit has malted sorghum extract, is there...

    Golden Ale?

Thanks for the quick response! I'll definitely switch out the sugar for some honey and turbinado. I might also add some maltodextrin for extra body. The beer I'm hoping to replicate was thicker than some of the typical beers like Budweiser. Is getting half the IBU's from late addition...

    Golden Ale?

I've looked around the forum a bit for a golden ale recipe to try for my first beer but haven't found much info. It seems you guys enjoy the IPA's and I just haven't acquired the taste for them yet. Maybe with time! The beer I'm trying to recreate is an ale from my local brewpub that I used to...
