Thanks for the responses. And yes, I did brew the extract version. A bad mix of wort/water was what I would have thought too, except that I started the boil with the recommended volume, added the recommended top-off water volume, and had the final volume at what I was looking for. Who knows...

The color difference is interesting, I wouldn't have thought it would be so dramatic. Was there a taste difference between the two? I just started making hard cider and I'm interested in trying to make some applejack at some point too.
