    Counteract metabisulfite and sorbate

Still have lots of activity in the air lock. How long do wines typically take to ferment dry?

    Counteract metabisulfite and sorbate

Thanks for the ideas, all. I made a yeast starter with 2 cups water and sugar. Let that go for about 24 hours, then pitched it along with 8 more packets of yeast at 10:30 last night. At this point, I have a nice active fermentation. Air lock is bubbling away, and there is a nice kraussen...

    Counteract metabisulfite and sorbate

Help!!! Ive been brewing beer for a few years now with great success so I decided to try my hand at winemaking. Unfortunately, while making my first kit tonight I got distracted and accidentally added the potassium metabisulfite and sorbate to the juice mixture before pitching the yeast. Is...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Did an overnight mash for a BIAB blonde ale last night. Going to start the boil in another hour or so.

Convert extract recipe to all grain for BIAB

Thanks for the replies all. I know it isn't going to be an exact science for the conversion. Iver done a few small BIAB batches before and they've come out good assuming 70% efficiency. I will the grains at my lhbs, so no control over how fine they'll be. To compensate for this I have mashed...

Convert extract recipe to all grain for BIAB

It is a citrusy blonde ale. Only other ingredients are the hops (1 oz perle 60 mins, .5 oz citra 30 mins & .5 oz citra 0 mins), clarity ferm, & California ale yeast

Convert extract recipe to all grain for BIAB

Thanks! That chart looks like it would actually be more like 8 pounds since the original had 6 pounds of liquid extract, not dry. But, what grain(s) should I use?

Convert extract recipe to all grain for BIAB

Hi all, it has been quite some time since I last brewed and I cannot find my CD to install BeerSmith2 on my new computer. I think I'm going to have some time to brew this weekend and I'd like to convert an extract recipe I have done in the past to all grain for BIAB. The basic malts/grains in...

    Heading for bottle bombs?

I get what you're saying, but after a few minutes when the foam had settled down, the beer did not seem overcarbed based on mouth feel. I have since opened several more bottles and they've all been fine. I suspect the foaming was due to the extra head space on the first bottle and not a sign of...

    Heading for bottle bombs?

Thanks. Like I said, I played around with my expected volume to avoid over carbing the bottles in case my yield was lower than expected, which is exactly what happened. The behavior you describe - big burst of air and foaming up badly - is exactly what happened. The beer wasn't really...

    Heading for bottle bombs?

2 weekends ago I bottled a small batch of pumpkin ale. I targeted around 2.6 volts of carbonation expecting to get close to 2 gallons yield. Based on the number of bottles I filled, I actually only had around 1.7 gallons. When I was figuring my bottling sugar, I had tried a range of yields for...

    Explain efficiency please!!!

Thanks. I thought I understood what you were trying to say, but I couldn't get the same numbers as you so I thought I was even more confused...haha

    spin off of explain efficiency

That batch was my first BIAB attempt and I think I got close to 80% efficiency. I used the grain mill at my LHBS, ran the grain through twice. Target mash temp was 156 degrees, but I'm not sure if I hit it or not because I broke my thermometer while adding the grains. For my Target 2.25 gallon...

    Explain efficiency please!!!

Can you walk me through the formulas? Maybe it is just too early, but I'm not following your numbers. I get where you're coming up with the 165 points that I got, but I'm coming up with 212 total theoretical points instead of 198. I get the total predicted points =...

    Explain efficiency please!!!

Here is the grain bill: 4 lb 6.4 oz 2 row 6.6 oz crystal malt 60L 3.5 oz chocolate malt 3.5 oz flaked oats 7 oz pumpkin puree I started with 4 gallons of water and ended up with about 2.5 gallons in the fermenter at 1.066 SG.
