That was my first thought too but the plug is nice and tight (that's what she said...)
I used TreeTop per usual. I thought the OG seemed a bit low, usually it is closer to 1.065. I assumed my refractometer was having issues...
The fermentation temp is holding at 68. I pitched 1packet of Notty directly on top of the must.
The batch size is 5 gallons. I also added 2 pounds of corn sugar to up the starting gravity.
I have made this recipe 2 other times it usually finishes around 1.000
My ciders OG was 1.052. I pitched with Notty. Two weeks later air lock action is non-apparent and my gravity is 1.021.
Do I pitch another pack of Notty or shake carboy and take another reading in a week?
I was hoping to have this kegged and serve for Thanksgiving.
+1 for going with a 10 gallon. I just got done using my 10g rubbermaid to brew edworts haus pale ale and it worked awsome. I could easly have done a double batch with room to spare!
I realize I am not the first (or even the 1000th) to make this statement, but Thanks EdWort!!! your recipe is my second AG and I just hit the OG on the nuts!!! I almost have my boil going so I can add this cascade and stop salivating over the smell.
Thanks Again Ed for a Sweet recipe!!!
I have about 2 hours left of work, then I will drive as fast as the law allows to my house, run downstairs, and put my head under my Stout faucet. I am planning a brew day tomorrow so Life is Good!!
I used the batch sparge method.
Racked to my secondary last night; I tasted the sample I used for my gravity reading and almost went back in for more... It was Amazing!!!
Start to finish it was in the 5 hour range, but i was multi-tasking i.e. taking care of my daughter. I'm guessing I could easly knock off some time if I was just brewing. The recipe was a Dry Stout from Northern Brewer in Milwaukee.
Just about ready to pitch my White Labs Irish Ale Yeast starter. Then a small bit of clean-up and its off to dream about future brews.
God Bless Wisconsin, it appears that I will have some snow to shovel in the morning...
Things have gone fairly well so far. I missed my mash temp a bit due to temp loss durnig the hour... but I am not freaking, I know the rest of the evening will go great. Nothing a homebrew or 2 can't fix.
I live in Fond du Lac, so for convience I usually buy from NB or AHB. I also stop in Slinger at a nice LHBS. But haveing a name like NB coming to Milwaukee is awsome news for me. Plus as an added bonus my sister-in-law works extremely close and can pick up things for me. I cannot wait to go!!!
I have a Keg of Hard Cider that I did just for my in-laws annual Thanksgiving Day Open House. We are also serving a Pumkin Ale that our freinds brewpub made. Gotta Love The Holidays!!!
