What is the "worst" beer you like? Your guilty pleasure, if you will...

Old Style. Always brings back memories of watching the Cubs lose on a beautiful sunny day at Wrigley. Nothing better on a hot day in the bleachers.

    Avery IPA Clone

Bump. Just got my hands on some Avery IPA for the first time, and I'd love to hear how this came out.

Help me pick a yeast for my porter

I love WLP028 (Edinburgh) for anything that I want a little malt to shine through. I've done porters, stouts, and even an IIPA with great results.

    Bell's Hop Slam

    Let's look at IIPAs by cost per ounce: Hopslam $16 per 72 ounces (12oz x 6 bottles) = $0.22 per ounce Compare: DFH 90 min $10 per 48 oz (12 oz x 4 bottles) = $0.21 per oz Stone Ruination $15 per 72 oz = $0.21 per oz Three Floyds Dreadnaught $8.50 per 22 oz = $0.39 per oz...

    Cascade IIPA--yeast suggestion?

So I have about 10 oz of cascade hops left in my freezer from my last Hops Direct buy, and I have another pound on the way... so I figured I would try my hand at an all cascade IIPA. I've only got a 7 gal brewpot, so the DME is in there to get the OG up using my system. Two questions: 1...

    Double IPA mouthfeel

Hey all, I'm having trouble nailing down that silky smooth mouthfeel that comes with my favorite IIPAs (i.e. Dreadnaught, 90 minute). I don't have the kettle room to do an AG IIPA, so I'm trying to put together an extract recipe that will do it. Any thoughts on the best way to get that...

    Brown porter--no crystal?

Oh--good to know. I'm still an AG noob. So high mash temp is more for mouthfeel and body rather than sweetness? by the way--three responses in 10 minutes. i love this forum. you guys rock. :rockin:

    Brown porter--no crystal?

Hey all, Here's a recipe I'm toying with for a brown porter. (It's pretty hoppy for a brown, and may actually break into the robust area, but I'm trying Randy Mosher's technique of getting most of the hop bitterness by late additions) I'm thinking of bypassing the crystal malt and getting...

    Better as an extract recipe?

Didn't mean to offend or start a debate as to which is better. I just noticed that the "same" recipe brewed back to back (~1 week between them), with the same equipment and same process tasted remarkably different. The only difference was how the fermentable sugars were obtained. I was...

    Better as an extract recipe?

I recently made the switch to AG, and have been doing some of my favorite recipes as AG instead of extract. So far, they have all been better as AG rather than extract. While SWMBO and I were enjoying one of these (Orfy's mild mannered ale) last night, she asked me if I knew of a recipe that...

Stone APA in BYO, December 08

Just racked this to the secondary. Mashed at 155, used S-04. I couldn't find either hop, so I used Galena for bittering and Cascade as a FWH addition instead of the 15 min. The color is spot on, and it tastes pretty damn good so far. Once the Galena mellows some, I think it will be pretty close.

    Last minute advice?

Great day. 80% efficiency, hit my temps, and have the primary bubbling away as we speak. When I got it into the primary, I thought about starting with only grain, water, hops and yeast, and had the urge to yell "I made beer!" :mug:

    Last minute advice?

Sweet. Thanks for all of the tips. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Last minute advice?

So my first foray into the AG world is tomorrow. I'm doing 5 gal of EdWort's Haus Pale, as it seems to be the equivalent of prom night for most of the AG folks here. I've got my checklist, ingredients in labeled baggies, and all of my equipment ready. Any last minute advice from the...
