Also...get the Designing Great Beers book. It has great chapters on calculating your grain bill. With the calculation methods used in the book, you can easily learn to calculate your grains and all hop additions (even lots of multiple additions) for ANY size batch.
I read this post with much...
Thanks for the tip knownikko. I'll try that, sounds like it's working for you. This thread has been full of helpful tips - going to brew this weekend using the method demonstrated here. Maybe I will rethink and do the Scottish after all.
I like the Scottish Ales myself. Have the stuff to make one, but under the impression that it needs to ferment at lower temps than I can usually manage. What does anyone think about that - I have the Wyeast Scottish Ale yeast for it. I live in Florida and it can be quite pricey to air condition...

At the risk of sounding so redundant - Kudos on the great post. The sign of a real teacher is someone who can make it sound so simple. You have all the necessaries and none of the confusing complications.
Looking forward to trying your method this weekend as a matter of...
I posted not long ago..before my equipment came in. It arrived last Saturday and my first batch is fermenting. Looks good so far. I made an Irish Red from a Midwest kit.
I live in Port St Lucie, FL. I would be interested in a get-together...BBQ...something like that. My boyfriend has the Beer...
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions! I downloaded the catalog from Northern Brewer and sent away for hard copy, also checked out austinhomebrew.
It looks like my first batch is fermenting nicely, have my fingers crossed for success on the first one.
Thanks again to...
Ok, I just made my very first batch of beer on Saturday. I am hooked! I made an extract kit from Midwest - the Irish Red Ale. I thought I would keep making the extracts for a while until I get my confidence level and skills up, then try my hand at all grain sometime in the future.
My question...
I'm more newbie than you...haven't even got beer making equipment yet! Decided to do some research first. My boyfriend has the Beer Machine. Not sure how versatile it is, but I would like to be able to make my own from "scratch".
Looking forward to learning from all of you!
Thanks...
