Red Beer (as in beer + tomato juice)

Pardon me, shellfish. Or fruit/vegetable juice with any meat extract in it that I didn't put there. Same reason I've never grabbed a nice warm can or bottle of Beefamato.

Red Beer (as in beer + tomato juice)

I've never had the opportunity/guts to try Clamato. Juice with fish in it hasn't ever been high on my list of desires. Maybe I'll have to get over it.

That makes me feel good. Trapped in Illinois, it's nice to know that things back home are still right and proper. Thanks.

Red Beer (as in beer + tomato juice)

OK, everywhere I mention this I get all kinds of disgusted reactions. I don't care. It's one of the great beer-based pleasures in life and if I'm the only one doing it, that's fine. (Actually, a little googling shows that others are doing it, but mostly as a hangover cure.) When I was a kid I...

Sierra Nevada Harvest Fall 2008 Wet Hop Ale

I spotted this today and was happy to pay about $5/bottle. It's got great color, and it's an OK beer, but I was expecting something a lot more amazing. I grow hops and love to crush them and inhale deeply when they're ripe. I LOVE hops. This stuff doesn't smell all that hoppy compared to other...

This year's harvest of 90 yr old hops, and a harvesting tip

Yes, but it'll have to be next fall. I gave away most of this year's crop so only have enough left for one or two trial batches, depending how much I use per batch. Some kind of hop swaps between growers would be a great idea. Probably such a thing already exists. O

This year's harvest of 90 yr old hops, and a harvesting tip

Precisely what I was planning to do. I don't know if they still count as fresh now that they're dried, vacuum-packed and frozen. Next year I'm going to be ready to brew when harvest season comes around. I doubt I'll use them before drying, for fear of tasting too much vegetable flavor, but I'll...

I've ordered the gear, now I'm just waiting for UPS to show up.

This year's harvest of 90 yr old hops, and a harvesting tip

Hi all-- My great-great-grandfather planted hops on our farm in Montana before or around 1920. I don't know the variety. Probably cluster, if cluster existed then, or maybe they're a rare (or even otherwise extinct) old German variety that some member of the family brought with them. I don't...

    2008hops

2008 harvest (only a small portion of total) of unknown hop variety planted in 1920's or before in NW Montana. Now growing in Illinois. These were the last ones harvested--some are past their prime. Earlier batches (before insane amounts of rain drove me off) were fresher and prettier, but I...
