I'm new at this too, but I think one of the reasons you got so much gunk in the blowoff tube is because your carboy seems a bit small. The krausen doesn't have anywhere to go. I doubt it'll affect the end result however. Brew on!

That's good advice, and would make me somewhat less upset that I just ruined my freezer. But I've learned a lesson here, and it's don't drill through the side of my freezer. That's why I'm going to build a collar!

Consensus seems to be here is that labels are a cool idea, but quickly become a PITA when you have to remove them. Most people use stickers on the bottle cap or write on the bottle cap itself, since you are not going to reuse it. But if you want to use labels, there are some good labeling...
