    Drying....?

What is everyone's experience with drying in a home dehydrator? I got one of these larg-ish models from a big-box retailer. It seems to be intended for making jerky and similar items, but it works fine for hops, apparently. It holds a couple of pounds of freshly harvested cones, so about one...

Best way to use homegrown hops?

You need to dry or use these VERY quickly after harvesting. I ended up splurging on one of these: http://www.chardproducts.com/assets/Uploads/SlideImages/_resampled/FillWyI3NjciLCI0NTAiXQ/DD-SS16T-1-850x500.jpg Right now, I have about 1 kg of fresh Cascade hops in it drying - 8 trays loaded...

    2021 Rhizomes

Second year for 25 Crystal and 21 Hallertau. Expanding each to a row of 30, then adding a row of 30 Cascade and 2 rows of 30 Mt Hood for a total 150 plants. I have some work ahead of me.

New guy question about rhizome supplier

60 days in, 26 of the 27 planted rhizomes have taken, and a number of them have reached waist-high on the trellis. The smallest are at about 12-15", but all seem to be growing and bushing out, with the largest starting to pop some sidearms. In comparison, all 21 of the rooted cuttings that I...

    Disappointed in my rhizomes

I got 27 rhizomes of Crystal earlier this year, and planted late (end of May). 26 have made it with varying levels of growth, one had a couple of shoots break ground but never really took off; it finally died. None are doing as well as the 21 hallertau cuttings I put in about a week earlier...

New guy question about rhizome supplier

Well, they have all now sprouted, so I guess all is well. So far, so good.

    Did I do something wrong?

When you say "cuttings" are you referring to small rooted plants or rhizomes?

    Rhizomes vs. rooted cuttings?

Cuttings. Yeah, this is what happens when your tiller selects an inopportune time to break down. I'll probably end up tilling around and between the rows after harvest, and use cardboard scraps or landscape cloth to get rid of the grass between the individual hills. I will definitely till it...

    Rhizomes vs. rooted cuttings?

Two weeks ago I planted 21 rooted cuttings and 27 rhizomes. All the cuttings are doing OK, and 15 of the rhizomes are showing visible shoots. The trellis: Two of the rhizome plantings: Note that they are putting out multiple shoots, and I'm finally starting to see some leaves on a handful...

New guy question about rhizome supplier

It's now just under 2 weeks from planting, and about half are showing growth, though a couple are just buds without leaves yet. I'm optimistic. though, that the majority of them will take root and get a good start towards next year.

    Daisy Chain 30 amp Receptacles?

Yes, you can wire multiple receptacles to a single breaker, as long as the breaker is sized at or lower than the outlet ratings and wire gauge. If you try to run both loads, the breaker will trip before any damage will be done to the wiring - which is the breaker's intended purpose. It is...

    First year hop grower

No advice on the hops, but what model is that Challenger? Mine is a '16 Scat Pack....

    Are my rhizomes dead?

A similar option might be Hop Varieties - Sandy Ridge Farms, if they still have any available. I am happy with the plants I got from them a few weeks ago.

    Training question

There is a lease in place for dairy feed grains - corn and soy, alternating years. It is just about profitable enough to pay the tax bill on the land...but not quite. Even with moderate yield and below average pricing, hops comes out ahead financially. The only major hurdle is the...
