Agreed. 10-gal cooler is the way to go. If you buy from Lowes or Home Depot, they have a version with the store name on it that costs nearly $20 less than the standard Igloo or Rubbermaid cooler.

I appreciate the advice. I'll think about it as I build the collar. Since the Johnson controller is already on the way with other components I may just return this one to my friend. I don't like the thought of buying and connecting power outlets to it.

Whatever you do, don't try to put your wort through a paint strainer after cooling. Iwound up with abig bag full of beer. That was the most frustrating thing I've experienced in brewing. I had to stab the filter repeatedly for like 20 minutes to get all the wort out.
