    Whoops ,no yeast

I brewed up a nice batch today in midst of an argument with SWMBO. Got everything in my bucket ready to go when I realize I didn't have any yeast . DOH. Anyway in a bit of a panic I opened one of the bottles from my last batch which has been conditioning for 5 days and poured that in...

    Vinegar

Yes. Badly I put one bottle of apple wine made from bought apple juice to one side without a cork for exactly this reason .. forgot about it for about three months and then I gave it a quick sip ... tasted almost exactly like the bottles which I corked. I keep meaning to look into it...

    service life for plastic fermenters?

Strange that a company which sells fermentors recommend you buy a new one quite often :D. Doesn't take a genius to work it out. I cant see a good reason why a bucket cant be used more then 5 times as long as you sterilize it correctly. Why the worry about scratches? If the...

    Why the names?

Oddly enough while I was making wine I didn't feel the need for a name or fancy labels ... or indeed any kind of label except Ingredients ABV Date Handwritten on a bog standard "address" type label I don't bother labeling my cider at all except the 2 litre bottles which go for...

Ive just been working my way through emptying some bottles ready for my firts brew and it's just occurred to me that I can get a bottle, label, cap and some pretty decent beer for just slightly more then simple empty bottle cost's me from the LHBS How's that work?

    How was beer invented

Been thinking about this for a while. Cider and wine are pretty simple to make .. in fact it was in inevitable that in the times before sterilization somebody would drink some juice which had "gone off" and realized what great fun it was. But producing beer is a different matter I think...
