    Stuck Mash Again!

An update: I've brewed two batches since I last posted on here. I believed that the fitting that goes through the screen was getting pushed up agains the bottom of the mash tun which was sealing off any flow. So, my next batch I cut off a small piece of cpvc to act as a spacer and not let the...

Rootbeer (Bottled from Keg) Bottle bomb

Just as I was going to bed last night I heard shattering glass which I pinned to roommates dropping something, then it woke me up again at 3am. I went and checked what it was turned out it was my rootbeer bottles exploding! I know if you bottle condition these that they will explode if not...

    Stuck Mash Again!

I use this tubing from morebeer. I live close to their warehouse so all my stuff is from them. When I add the rice hulls it's after I've already stirred in all my grain. I'll then pour in some rice hulls and mix again. The false bottom does sit evenly on the bottom. And actually...

    Stuck Mash Again!

I do always stir when I pour the grain in, what I meant was that I didn't stir every 15 min during the mash like I normally do. Stirring the mash right before vorlauf sounds like it could be a good idea to agitate the grain to keep it from embedding itself in the false bottom. I'll try that next...

    Stuck Mash Again!

I don't use many flaked grains or rye, actually I think I've only used oats in one brew ever. It's a problem in almost any hobby, you buy upgraded equipment to solve a problem and it opens up twice as many more complicated problems! For my next brew this is what I'll try: 0.5-1lb of rice...

    Stuck Mash Again!

I did try probably a quarter pound of rice hulls in my second batch. I also tried not stirring the mash because I was afraid that the first time I may have got some grains under the false bottom and somehow clogged it, I don't it was a guess. I use the mill at the homebrew supply store to mill...

    Stuck Mash Again!

I've brewed all grain for almost a year now and have been using the 5gal cooler mash tun with stainless braid with no issues. Two brews ago I decided I wanted to squeeze a few more efficiency points out so I switched to the cooler false bottom from morebeer.com I also decided to rig up a...

Reusing yeast for my next batch

Another thing to think about, I was faced with this same question last week when I brewed. I had a yeast cake from bottling the night before and I was going to brew 2 brews the next day. I could have racked onto the yeast cake but instead I swirled the cake around, let it settle for a couple...

    10 gallon batch w/ 5 gallon cooler

I'd like to make 10 gallons of the same ingredients beer. I was wondering if I could do 1 mash then run it all out as a normal 5 gallon batch, then cover up my kettle and mash another 5 gallon batch and add it to the kettle then continue like a 10 gallon batch. I have a keggle and 2 carboys...

    Expanding to 2 kegs

If I were to make one Id get a brass ball valve plus check valve on each line. Not sure if that is price worthy over just buying: 2 way gas manifold It look expandable... am I right? More kegs definitely sounds good. Someday... Pricing it out looks to be around 110 dollars to add another...

    Expanding to 2 kegs

Hello, I got my first keg a couple weeks ago and love it. I want to have beer always on tap so I figure I need another keg so one can be carbing while the other is serving (quite a bit of consumption at this college house). My theory was that I could have a T off of the regulated line and...

Brew day results questions all grain

Yea I guess I should do a test to see how much actually boils off for a given time and fuel knob position. The honey porter has been in the fermenter since Saturday. Is it too late to add some distiller water to bring down the og? I guess that would throw off some of my gravity measures then...

Brew day results questions all grain

Interesting I didn't think about adding water after the boil. Should I be concerned with bacteria in the water then? I thought boil off was also a function of firing rate of the burner. I could turn down the flame low and have a less vigorous boil which would boil off less water right? There...

Brew day results questions all grain

That kind of what I thought too about the torrified wheat. Most of the grains were popped open though so I figured I would be okay. Also the LHBS had them vacuum packed in 1lb bags so I'm not sure if they would let me mill them or not. Today the honey porter started getting air lock activity...

Brew day results questions all grain

I did a double brew yesterday as my 3rd and 4th batch. 3rd batch was the white house honey porter as a kit from morebeer. Brew went well but ended up boiling off more than planned to I ended up with an OG of 1.072. The recipe says its should be between 1.054-1.059. Im worried that the yeast...
