My guess would be that your beer is fine... you have to try pretty hard to mess it up. Your cell phone, on the other hand, is probably a different story.

I just use a piece of scrap paper to make a funnel. The DME just slides right down, and any little bit that sticks to the paper just gets thrown away. I figure that I'm going to boil it anyways, so it should be sanitary enough. It's worked perfectly fine everytime so far...

Given the right conditions, 400 series stainless will rust. It can also be slightly magnetic too. You might want to see if you can check the material of the pieces, and change to 300 series if possible.

Make sure that you have the suction and discharge of the pump correct for your application, in addition to the rotational direction of the drill. I've used them a bunch for pumping SAE 46 oil at work, and they work pretty good (solid stream) if you have everything correct. If it's not set up...
