Ignore the LHBS guy. I have been brew 2.5 gal AG batches for a year. My wife doesnt really like beer, so it's just me drinking homebrew. I cut down from 5gal to 2.5 gal as that gives my around a case of beer. It works well for me, you gotta do what works for you.
