I think coderage is working on making one of these. Some of us have been waiting and watching for one of these to actually come on the market. Maybe we'll get lucky and coderage will post something.
I'm in the same boat as you, my background is in software and not EE and making one of these...
From his site I see you can buy just the probe and a labjack. Labjack supports several programming languages, and you'd be more than able to implement your "java" or "web interface". I personally enjoy the .Net framework myself and will likely grow my own UI around this once it's released.
Checkout the brewtroller forums about how to calculate volume. The following thread is great.

Blackheart,
This is great. Haven't been around the boards much due to taking a new job a few months back, but I always watch the updates...
Might have been .020 then, but I'm still getting wrinkles even using a blow torch and sand. Oh well, dont want to hijack this thread talking about tube bending. Ill post this else where.
Where did you get your .020 wall tubing? I got some .032 from nybrewsupply and am unhappy with the bends I am getting.
I'm using the following bender by IMPERIAL:
So Im getting close to being ready to brew with some keggles and have a question about water height and dip tubes thats been bugging me. So Ive got a false bottom and dip tube in my MLT. I need about 3 gallons of water to cover the top of the compression fitting that attaches my dip tube to...
I couldn't agree more. Please keep us posted as you go. I'm in the process of finishing off my stand and keggles right now, and hope to spend the better part of this upcoming winter working on the automation.
Im still somewhat torn on what way to go. About 4 months ago when I started planning this whole thing out in my head the Labjack was going to be my device of choice. I like you am a software engineer that writes software primarily in .Net (C#/VB.Net). My main issue with the BrewTroller is I...
I've been using the "511E EZ Lock Finishing Abrasive Buffs" on the Dremel for cleaning up the small areas, and they have been working great. The issue is just like the fine and medium discs for the angle grinder they leave swirl marks. Ive tried to clean them up using the 423E EZ Lock Cloth...
A real simple and inexpensive way to do it is have the metal company your buying the tubing from cut everything to length. This is what I did and for an extra $10 everything was to length and square.
Bobby did a great job in his "polishing your keg" thread of listing all the discs needed to polish a keg, and I've used the items listed to do some really nice work.
I've got a few hard to reach areas left on my stand I was unable to hit with the angle grinder and was thinking of using the...
jmansfield seems to have had some good luck doing this with a peltier aquarium chiller called the Ice Probe. Guy really seems to know his stuff, and is from what I understand the guy developing the real-time fermentation probe.
After reading the following article I thought this would be cool...
This is so the worst part about having a winter project run long. Spending the past three weekends weeding, raking and doing other outside work needed in the spring has about killed me because all I want to do is work on my system.
Whenever you do plan to fire this baby up for the first time...
