Question re: false bottom in MLT

Thanks, I'll try that too if there happens to be a lot of residual water. Right now I have SS tubing coming out of the cooler bulkhead. That tubing is connected to a 90 degree compression x npt elbow. I put a nut on the NPT (downward facing) portion of that elbow on top of the false bottom to...

Question re: false bottom in MLT

Nope, that must be it then. I'll check again with a couple feet of 1/2" tubing into my kettle and see if it is any better. Thanks!

Question re: false bottom in MLT

I just put a stainless false bottom in my MLT. I leak tested it last night - no leaks, but I have an issue. When I drain all the liquid from the cooler there is an inch or two left in the bottom (the level of the drain hole in cooler). What I expected to happen was that the false bottom would...

A bit confused on batch sparge water temp.

I agree with this. From what I understand, mash out is more important in fly sparging when the process of sparging takes longer. If you are putting your first runnings from a batch sparge immediately in the kettle and on the heat, the eznymes will quickly denature. Therefore a mash out step...

    Recommendations for first all-grain brew?

Doing my first AG in a couple weeks and I'm going with Ed Worts Haus Pale. Simple ingredients, simple mash schedule, and if you go with dry - simple yeast. Also, I wanted to go with a fairly light colored beer. Tired of all my recipes coming out darker than expected because of caramelized...

    Aeration by Electrolysis?

While electrolysis would generate molecular oxygen (O2) it also generates reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide, H2O2; superoxide anion, O2-; etc.). These molecules quickly react with proteins and lipids (including those in cells) causing damage and loss of function. Generating...

Question for users of a digital temp controller

That would work to prevent the temperature swings from opening the fridge door (and the unnecessary wear on the freezer compressor), but if you have an extra vigorous fermentation the carboy could actually be a degree or two warmer the the air temperature that the probe is measuring. Thats...

Question for users of a digital temp controller

I have the Johnson controller pictured in the original post. The SP is the temperature at which the controller turns on. Depending on whether it is set on cooling mode or warming mode it will turn on when the temperature rises above or falls below that temp, respectively. The differential...

    Never leave the carboy unattended

As said before, RDWHAHB! Check out this article from BYO on hot fermentations. Pay special attention to sidebar three at the bottom of the page. Belgian and wheat yeast strains tolerate high temps better and don't generate as much fusel alcohol.

    Is this a CO2 Tank?

The nut on the valve stem makes me think its a nitrogen tank. Nitrogen regulators have a female valve stem that accepts a male regulator fitting. CO2 tanks have a male valve stem that couples with a female regulator fitting. The liquid knob also would suggest N2.
