    Whereto next

I agree with duboman. You need to take your time with learning the process before you jump in head first. I brewed at least 5 kits and probably 15 total partial grain beers before I ever started with all grain. That being said, I would have never started all grain if it had not been for a new...

    Cold Break

The hops can still escape from the paint strainer bag. So the sludge could be a mix of hops, cold break, hot break, and even some grain from your mash. The hops are easy to notice because they are still green no matter what color the wort is.

    Cold Break

Well, I know I'm the one who started this and I was confused myself, but since I posted this original question I have tried a few new things that seem to work just fine. First of all, I don't concern myself with cold break at all. First off I don't use hop socks in the boil anymore. Then after...

    Cold Break

When Whirlpooling, do you wait until the wort is cooled or do you do it when it is hot? I have heard concerns about airation problems if the wort is cold, but not as much of a problem when it is cooled. Not exactly on topic, but another question I have that I thought I would ask to some more...

    Cold Break

Thanks for the input. I do somewhat filter my wort when transferring to the primary, so I am sure that helps some. I use a standard strainer and a funnel with a screen in it to keep as much of the hops and irish moss from being transferred to the fermenter. But I guess I am worried about...

    Cold Break

Ok, so I have been reading in Palmer's "Learn to Brew" about cold break. As I understand it, this is important to have a clear beer. The thing I am not understanding is how to keep it out of the beer. I use a wort chiller and the beeer cools down quite fast (I am actuall using two wort...

    Lagering

Cyber thanks. I am not sure if I am going to do the diacetyl rest or not. But if I do, I will probably just do it in the fridge and turn the controller up to 70 or so. If I dont do it in the fridge, I have a closet that will only get up around 78 and I don't really think I want it to get that...

    Lagering

Thanks strat thru. I appreciate it. It appears I have missed my window for the diacetyl rest. So I am just going to secondary and then lager. I appreciate all of your help and thanks to wilwest450 as well. I am going to make this beer again before too long and this time I will make sure...

    Lagering

I really dont know, or I would not have posted this. But I plan on doing some research to find out. I just know that there is a lagering process (if you want a true lager that is) and it is colder. The first beer I ever made was a partial extract ocktoberfest and I did not lager it. I just...

    Lagering

I am new to this whole thing, so I may need a little explanation to what diacetyl and how do you detect that? But what I am understanding from what you stated below is that after fermentation has finished and I secondary, I need to lager somewhere around 35 for a period of time(dependent on...

    Lagering

How long is the lagering process? And is the 2 day rest period enough or too much?
