Just wondering how many of these "spontaneous" breakages might be due to cleaning with caustic chemicals, as explained in post #2 of this thread.

No problem with that, but I do get a bit of a white film sometimes, so after cleaning with OxiClean and rinsing with tap water, I rinse with some white vinegar (acid) and water, then after rinsing that out, I do a final rinse with a quart or so of distilled water so it will dry without any water...

It's not critical - I just toss in maybe a quarter scoop with a gallon or so of water to clean my brew pot- just use as much as you need to get it clean.. Cleaning a carboy or Better Bottle, it's more important not to get too strong a mixture - there I use a full scoop (4 oz, I think) in 6...

I always clean my brew pot with OxiClean to break down the organic material. After this I have beerstone or other mineral deposits which the BKF cleans right up.

I've never used anything but the powder. Use full strength with a sponge and some water. It's acidic, so it dissolves mineral deposits and is slightly abrasive. Also re-passivates the stainless steel. You should be able to find it in your local grocery or hardware store.

Barkeepers Friend should work.

I have a right angle fitting on my FB which goes through the hole in the middle - it's 3/8 barb on the top side and 1/2 MIP on the bottom. I removed the nut on the bottom side and replaced it with a sawed off piece of 1/2 SS coupling. I sawed the coupling in two pieces, about 60%/40%, but...

Actually, all the tubing I used these on is vinyl beer line and gas line - I haven't tried this on silicone tubing.

Of course there is always an element of risk anytime you do something in a non-standard or non-approved manner, and I should point out that the lines I used this method on are not under constant pressure - just on my counter pressure filler. I was in a situation where I couldn't find the...

I have used some of the PEX clamps on lines that are too small for the clamp by wrapping the line with several (about 8, if I recall correctly) layers of heavy duty (pink) teflon tape to increase its OD. It's working fine, so far.

The clamps for PEX (at least the ones I've found at Lowe's) are not the size marked on the bag - I think the marked size must refer to the diameter (ID?) of the PEX line. Here's the dimensions of the ones at my local Lowe's. Bag label - # stamped on clamp (mm) - actual inch equiv. of mm...
