Wine filters - Do they oxidise wine?

Hi, I'm thinking of buying an inexpensive gravity fed filter to help clear my wine as suggested by my wine kit. My only concern is that the systems I've seen eg. 'Harris' filter the wine from the top of the carboy and drip drain to the bottom. Doesn't this introduce oxygen into the wine? I can't...

My wine is way too sweet!

I've had Munton's kits before and you don't have to add sugar them. They taste ok although they do have a slight twang to the taste (not sugary) Nothing that age can't sort out.

My wine is way too sweet!

No it's definitely sweet, you can taste the sugar. I'm wondering if the instructions were printed incorrectly. Adding 4kgs of sugar seems a lot to me, but having said that I'm a novice and I can't comment too much. Youngs is a big company and I'm sure they're right. Interesting about the acid...

My wine is way too sweet!

Thanks for your help. There's a lot to learn, but it's all interesting stuff. I'll try a different make and monitor it more closely. 12pm this end.

My wine is way too sweet!

Yes I agree at .994 you would think it would be normal. It is definitely too sweet and undrinkable unless you screw your face and pinch you nose. Sounds like I've passed the point of no return. As a matter of interest if I added some champagne yeast before the mistake of adding the stabiliser...

My wine is way too sweet!

Hi, I bought a wine kit and followed the instructions to the letter. I added 4kgs of sugar which gave a SG of 1.088. A month later at a constant 20 degrees it finished at 0.994 giving an approximate 12.5% ABV. This is when I should have tasted the wine but instead I followed the instructions and...

    Hi

Hi, Although I'm a novice I'm pretty sure you are fine. You want juice with no preservatives, such as sulphites. Buy juice that is real juice with as little additives as possible. Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) is fine. Watch these youtube videos although they are about cider. I find...

Fermentation won't stop - Should I transfer to secondary?

Hi, I bought a wine kit about a month ago and it is happily fermenting in the garage. It has been fermenting at 20 degrees for approximately a month now and although it has slowed it is showing no signs of stopping. The kit's instructions state that it should only take approximately 1 week to...

Yeast starter smells - should i use??

Yes good advice. Difficult to find a store that sells liquid yeast in England. My starter is possibly fine but I don't want to risk wasting 5 gallons of wine costing £23. Especially when it needs 4lb of sugar costing £5. I'd rather buy a couple of packets of dried yeast and sprinkle it on my...

Yeast starter smells - should i use??

As I am making wine I got the idea from YouTube. Could I make a starter from wine yeast using DME or is that wrong for wine yeast?
