I’ve used those on the gas grills at a vacation condo; they work well for saving fuel when people forget to turn off the grill. But I’m not sure I would trust them to more than +/- 5 minutes accuracy without some testing and calibration.
How are you thinking of using it?
Check out the podcasts in the first couple of posts. Most of the zinc in the boil is bound up with proteins et al. Adding zinc to the fermentation gets it where it needs to be.
Very timely post. Craft Beer and Brewing has a recent episode on fermentation health, with a deep dive on zinc at around the 21 minute mark link. I thought it was fascinating.
My main take aways:
* Cold side zinc addition is better, as studies show that 60% of hot side zinc is bound up in trub...

What size E-flask do you use? Is Fermcap enough to keep a 5L starter from overflowing a 5L E-flask? If you use a 6L E-flask, where did you get it? These can be very expensive.
Most 10 barrel conical fermenters have 6'+ of beer above the dump valve, which translates to at least 2.5 PSI. A CF10 has about 24" of beer above the dump valve (depending on valve placement) so less than 1 PSI. I suspect that, plus market differentiation, explains the difference.
I personally...
Is there a good primer or other introduction to barrel aging beers? A friend is offering me a couple of small whiskey barrels, one five gallon, one three, to use to try making a (hopefully worthy) barrel-aged beer. We both like dark belgians, and I have had a few nice barrel-aged interpretations...
I haven’t heard of the oxidation—> purple link, but I’m pretty anal about cold side oxidation so I don’t think that’s the cause. And I’ve followed the same cold-side process for multiple batches, so I don’t know what’s different about this batch.
Resurrecting a dormant thread…
I recently had the same issue with my CF10. It’s several years old with many batches and no new equipment so there is no way this is due to machine oils. The beer turned out great, possibly my best hazy to date, so I’m at a bit of a loss. Of course the beer was so...
So the root problem seems to have been a poor choice of power supply (a 5W iPhone cube) for the Raspberry Pi. I swapped it for a 10W iPad charger and it seems to be working, although the RPI is still giving me undervoltage warnings in syslog. I probably have an official RPI PSU somewhere, but...
