    Wort precipitate.

I mean, it's hard sometimes to not worry. Most of us spend a lot of time and money on building up our equipment, getting ingredients, picking/designing a recipe. It's scary to think one little slip up can cost you a batch of beer.

    Wort precipitate.

So I tried to take a reading but I couldn't get just the top layer and I ended up swirling all the precipitate material together. When I looked, the hydrometer measured 1.020. Which is pretty much impossible so I disregarded the reading and just filled the carboy with more water and pitched my...

    Wort precipitate.

Oh okay. That makes sense. I'm still unsure as to whether to mix before taking my OG reading, but I assume I shouldn't.

    Wort precipitate.

I've let my wort cool down and I put it in my carboy, but I've noticed something strange about this batch. There's lots of white cloudy precipitate that settles to the bottom of the carboy. The top layer is dark brown and looks like beer, the bottom looks almost like yeast, but I haven't...

    Knoxville swap (12-14 March??)

Sounds good! I'll make sure to check my messages Sunday.

    No visible fermentation?

My last batch was a wheat beer that fermented without me noticing. Either the bubbling stopped very fast or there was some sort of leak in the bucket lid. And there was only a very thin ring of krausen around the top of the bucket. So yeah, it can ferment very stealthily sometimes.

    Knoxville swap (12-14 March??)

I'll trade you a few brews! I just got into homebrewing a few months ago but I already have a Double IPA (simcoe) brewed and I'm bottling an American Wheat Beer tonight. I live in the campus area, I can see Neyland Stadium from my apartment, too, haha. I work a 9 to 5, but I can free up just...

    Invisible Fermentation

Yeah I'll probably be going to carboy from now on whenever possible. I've got one, don't know why I chose bucket that night. Oh well. Will probably be good beer. Hit my numbers fine!

    Invisible Fermentation

So I tried to make a pretty standard American Wheat Beer from the recipe here...

    Methods for straining?

I would get a roll of aluminum window screening from lowe's or home depot if I were you. I got some for about $7 and I use it for all the filtering I need. You would just need a few square inches to tie around the end of your cane. I folded some into two-ply to make a strainer for my mash tun...

    Temperature drops in mash tun?

Oh okay. Like I said, I wasn't too worried about 4 deg after 50 min. With stirring and opening. But yeah, I might just leave it closed next time unless I'm going to add 2 quarts of boiling water or something. I'm having trouble cooling the wort in my fermenter now. I'm adding ice bags, but it's...

    Temperature drops in mash tun?

Last night I brewed for the second time, an all-grain American Wheat beer. Everything thing went really smoothly and I hit my OG number okay. But there's something about the mashing I didn't quite understand. I was tracking the mash temp with a probed thermometer ...

    Mash tun filter ideas

I'm a new brewer. I've only done one brew so far, a double simcoe IPA (AG) that is going to get bottled from secondary this Friday :). I have already ordered more ingredients for a 2.5 gallon batch. My last one was a 5 gallon, I used my buddy's equipment. This time, I'm using most of my own...

Double IPA Double Simcoe IPA Recipe

I brewed my first batch of beer last night and I had this recipe picked out. Probably stupid going straight to all-grain, but I was too curious. Turned out to be a lot of fun for me and my girlfriend even if I oxidized/contaminated the beer. Anyways, thanks for the recipe, I'll get back to you...
