THIS. I feel the same way about the yeast calculators. If there was one built in to any brew software, I'd probably do a backflip. The brew day calculator would be nice for the SWMBO's out there as well.
A trick that i was taught for BIAB guys is to "double mill" your crush. Doing that will up your efficiency quite a bit. It allows for easier extraction through the mesh.
You DEFINITELY want to fly sparge slowly. I wouldn't say that it will drop your efficiency by 30 or 40 points but sparging too quickly will definitely play a role in leaving behind some good fermentable sugars. This mixed with a light crush and high gravity. Makes sense.
I live down the road from a BOP and have talked with the owner quite a bit. His biggest source of income is his taproom.
Not a bad thing to add-on if the state you live in allows it.
Thanks for the tip on the Fermcap. I'll snag some of that for sure. I'll keep up on the status of the brew and see what happens later. The temperature of the room is at a constant so we'll be set there.
Thanks guys!
So I'm making this yeast starter right... 32 oz water to 6 oz. DME started into a 64 oz. growler. No stir plate, just simple agitation. The plan was to pitch this beast into an IPA the next day.
Everything went fine of course until the next morning when I went out to discover a travesty strewn...
So glad to hear how many fellow brewers listen to the good stuff. I'm a metal/hardcore fan myself.
I like bands like The Ghost Inside, August burns red and Darkest Hour. But it's awesome to see all of the love for European and black metal too!
I really don't hear a lot of music that I don't...
Last week my buddy and I were brewing a batch of our IPA. Our plan was to bottle our Imperial Red on the same day. Amidst the entire process, we of course became rather hungry.
Being that we were outside I figured that I would just fire up the grill and barbecue a few brats and burgers. So I...
So my buddy and I recently bottled an all grain batch that we screwed up a little bit. We figured hey, let's just see what happens with it.
The interesting part? The 12 oz bottles came out fine while the 22s were very weak just like we expected. What happened?
My buddy and I named our brewery Jar'd Rabbit Brewing.
At first it seems like a silly name, but we named it after my nephew who passed away at birth. His name was Mason Ryan Haire, so we immortalized him through the one thing that brings us all together. Beer.
Mason - jar
Ryan - king
Haire -...
Well if you split them up into two different 2.75 gallon batches then adding a pound of fruit could be really strong.
I'm probably wrong. But I usually add the fruit in the boil. For a wit we added a full orange. It should turn out in the next few weeks.
You'll have to boil the fruit first...
That's an awesome idea. I think I'll try that. Dumping into a bottling bucket after sparging makes more dishes to do for really no reason.
The only downfall would be lifting a hefty grain bill up and moving it to the boil kettle. If your a little guy like me that is.
Does anyone else use this method. It seems a little unorthodox but has been working decently.
8 gal brew kettle
5 gal igloo mash tun
28" brew bag
I heat up the sparge water in the kettle and throw the grain bag inside of the mash tun like a liner. Dump the grain bill in the bag, then start...
