Holy cow, did it taste good. The vanilla was very prominent, where did it come from? The hops were not, however. We'll see how this comes around after conditioning.
Thanks for a great recipe, at this point we're wishing we did a 10 gallon batch.
It's in the chill phase right now. Our LHBS let us down a little - they were out of Special B, so they recommended Caramunich as the best substitute out of what they had. They were also out of Amarillos, so we're using Cascades (@6.3% AA) instead.
We used nearly 9 gallons to mash - our BIAB...
We currently have no drain. Only two holes so far - 1 for the element, the other for the brewhardware.com sightglass w/ temp probe threads.
Post boil we chill with an immersion chiller, then use an autosiphon to rack into primary. The stand is built purposely just high enough to do this.
The...
We were thinking of keeping our old turkey fryer setup in case we wanted to brew outside. But since electric is so much more hands off, we can just leave the mash / boil alone in the basement and do whatever the heck else we want, including going outside.
Perfect! I think I'll make a drop in crossbar right at hood height and throw one of those on there. Once the grains drain, it's pretty easy to lift with one person, so I can just slide it out.
That way I can remove the winch during the boil so it doesn't get steamed to death.
My only...
2nd batch went off smoother (IPA w/ belgian yeast and candy sugar).
Two process changes:
1. After mashout, we sparged with ~2 gal of hot tap water (~140°F)
2. Wife (who is smarter than me) folded the bag over itself before squeezing the grains, which worked way better.
We measured slightly...
Yes, exactly how I hooked it up. Keep in mind I bought different meters than Kal uses. You can see in the picture that the brightness matches perfectly on mine.
EDIT: Yes, mine says right in the instructions 8-12V AC/DC input. I originally was going to power it with a 9v battery until I saw...
Okay, I looked up the instruction manual - section D of the Abuer ASL-51 lists terminal 3 as 9VDC output, and 4 as common. I used those two to power my Ammeter. I wired completely from the hip, and it made sense to me at the time. Has worked great for two test boils and two batches of beer so...
So in the future I should ask my LHBS for a fine crush?
BTW, they recommended we add some microwaved LME right to the fermenters to boost the gravity back up to the right level to save the beer.
