Strike water help / Pre-heat tun / Beersmith

I like to prehead the tun. It makes hitting the temp easier and more accurate. I also like it because it rinses my mash tun out after it sits for a few weeks.

(another) Alton Brown/Good Eats "Amber Waves" Episode Discussion

It's the same with me. I thought that brewing beer would be too hard until I saw AB make it. It also made me wonder what an ale would taste like (I had only had BMC beers up until then) and I went and bought some Sierra Nevada and Bass PA. My life has never been the same. :rockin: :mug:

How do I make Apple Cider Vinegar?

The unpasteurized ACV in the health food store has the culture you need floating inside it ( I have some right here and you can definitely see it in there.)

Global Warming can lick my bean bag

I think that we would all have to be fools to downright deny the climate changes that are happening. and yeah it's because we are driving cars etc, and putting mass amounts of carbon in the air. I would be extremely surprised if all those nasty fumes didn't do anything to the environment...

Better Bottle vs. water cooler bottle

The reason that everyone uses BB instead of those water cooler bottles is because the water cooler bottles leach chemicals into any liquid that is in it (including the water...). The chemical has only recently been linked to cancer and developmental disabilities in rats. It is the same...

    Does anyone strain their wort?

I only strain the wort if I use whole hops. Most of the time I use pellet and just dump it all in. The pellets tend to mostly stick to the sides of the fermenter at the top of the fermented beer and it is easy to rack the beer to secondary and get no pieces in the secondary. I don't even...

    Hopping and taking readings

It's unheard of to get an infection from hops in the secondary, due to their antiseptic properties. You don't boil them first. :mug:

AG is not as good as everyone says it is.

Plus now you get to smell that wonderful warm malt mash smell :mug:

He also does a spot on impression of billy corgan from the smashing pumpkins losing his car keys :D

Fermentation too hot for wheat beer?

I do the same thing, and it works fantastic. It can be 80 degrees in my kitchen but my fermenter will be sitting in a tub of 65 degree water. I use 4 two-liters and rotate them out of the fridge every 12 hours or so, depends on temps. I also use the bin as my sanitizing tub when brewing and...

    Hopfelwein...?

when i make apfelwein anymore i use 3 pounds of honey to 6 gallons apple juice in a 6 gallon fermenter. It is delicious and has a subtle floral-ness in the backround that the corn sugar just doesn't have. Hops sound really good in apfelwein though - cascades maybe? I think ginger apfelwein...

    The UNwallowing Thread!

Drinking homebrew, it's storming outside and I'm about to eat a chicken dinner with the pregnant SWMBO. Doesn't get much better, really. :ban: :mug:

Mash... - (do I need a grain mill?)

AG is easy and much more fun. I think your LHBS guy is BS'ing you a little about that "1 in 100" thing. Many people that get into homebrewing do so to do things themselves, for the satisfaction of doing it themselves. That being said, I can't see 1 out of every 100 skipping the biggest step...

What Are Your Methods for Achieving High Efficiency?

I don't believe it would effect the efficiency negatively, but your OG is the the measurement of the concentration of sugars in the wort. By having more wort volume you lower your OG but not your efficiency. Boiling the wort down to your intended amount will increase the sugar concentration...

How many gallons of EdWort's Haus Pale Ale have been made?

I've made 2 batches and have ingredients for 2 more coming from the LHBS. I'll post when they are brewed as well. This is the first beer I've wanted to make more than once. 370 + 10 = 380
