    First Batch Fermentation Questions

You should just wait. It will take it a month or more to fully ferment, and the krausen to go down, I had one batch take FOREVER (3 months!) to calm down.

    Beer Ruined

It also seems that just soaking in warm water does quite well too. I tried it after my last batch, and all of the crud from the krausen came right off, no scrubbing needed.

    Banana Esters

You could use a tub with water to put your carboy in. And add 20oz frozen bottles to bring the temps down. Cooling an entire room would be harder.

    Can't stop the foam

Whew! Man, I'm glad you didn't dump it! Would have to report you for alcohol abuse if you had! :mug:

high final gravity and weird taste at bottling...

I would say just wait it out. It's hard telling if it will go away or not. Try one in a week, then another in 2, then 3....etc. Hopefully it will turn out fine. But from everything I hear, don't dump it! Just wait it out! If you dump it now, it'll be possible alcohol abuse! :D

    Brewing with your kid..Part #2

I haven't actually brewed "with" my kids, but they hang out to see what's going on. My 10 year old isn't too interested, but my 2 year old (both boys), loves to hang out in the kitchen while I do it. The batch I brewed in January, I did the day before my birthday, and the 2 yr old was...

    new meaning to "island brewery"

Man, it looks like it would end up being "roughin' it" camping as a lifestyle. I love going camping, but I'm not too sure I would like it living that way, though, I guess you would get used to it. Hell, people did it for centuries!

    Cooking food in wort pot?

That must be one huge kettle!

    Looking to begin brewing.

I'm not really sure about books, I have gotten most of my reading online. As for kits, I started with a Mr. Beer, but it is small. But then I found one of the plastic 5 gal water bottles, cleaned it up, and cut batches down for 4 gallons instead of 5. You can modify the recipes you find...

    Rookie Porter question

How long was it in the fermenter? I just bottled a batch last night that I started in January (I would have done it a month ago, but the cold weather in Jan/Feb made the yeast fall asleep for 3 weeks!). Now I am figuring it has at least 2 weeks in the bottle, but probably 4 before it's ready...

    I'm hooked

Man oh man! My second batch is turning out awesome! And I decided to name it Port Ale. It's a nice dark reddish amber, somewhat bitter and slightly dry. And I love it! I'm so hooked on this hobby now!

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

It seems that most around here let it go in the primary 2-4 weeks. I plan on letting the batch I started last night go at least 3 if it clears, and quite possibly 4. So, I would say no less than 2 weeks. But like I said, I'm only on my 3rd batch, still learning, and experimenting a bit...

Nah, depending on the ingredients it could slow way down, but still be fermenting. Hang tight, and let it go it's time, and I would bet all will be cool! I'm on my 3rd batch, and they will slow way down 2-5 days in.

Was I supposed to use a hops bag?

They will all fall to the bottom, I have now bottled a couple batches that I put "free floating" hops in, and they all settled out.

    Primary EXPLODED!

Sounds more like a good squirt instead of an assplode! :cross: haha it would be interesting to see on video. I guess it's a good thing that the wife really only goes to the basement for storage, and to get things off the printer, my little beer corner seems safe.
