    Vinegar Mothers

Thanks, I've been meaning to try this with some Mead, but the Mother has been an issue. Hard to find, plus it hasn't been high on the priority list. I will keep an eye out for the Bragg's, probably at the local Health Food store. I like the Malt vinegar idea too.

What else is homemade at your house??

Great thread, how I missed it before, I don't know. Our list keeps growing, and for us it is also a quality thing. Mayonnaise ( with our backyard chicken eggs ) Butter Yogurt Breads (Pizza/loafs/rolls/bagels) we grind our own meat (burgers/meatloaf/meatballs) roast our own coffee...

bottling for the first time..what did you do wrong?

They make spring loaded bottling wands now. I had the old style which worked just fine till I bottled a batch of Mead a month ago. Sticky mess! Went to LBHS to get a new wand and they don't even carry the non-loaded ones anymore. And definitely sanitize extra caps. You may misfire a...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I've been sitting on a IPA recipe waiting for a brew-day. Which means waiting for my wife to deliver our baby so I can get a week's Paternity leave and stay home. She's already agreed that part of my duties that week are to make this beer but the baby is just not with the program yet. Also...

    air bubbles while siphoning

I had that same problem till I got a little pipe clamp that I tighten down when I use the siphon. I got less air and stopped having the other problem of premature loss of siphon pressure. :(

Why is everyone not doing this?

Very interesting... The do it yourself spirit is definitely part of why we brew our own. We also make our own bread, yogurt, and grow our own veggies. And soon, we'll be roasting our own coffee from green beans. To add to the bevy of Yogurt methods, here's ours. 1 Gallon whole milk...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Time permitting, we'll be brewing a nice Warsteiner Pilsner recipe. Simple recipe but the wife loved it last summer so we're doing it again. Just need some cooperation from the little ones.

First brew done, a few questions before the second

The benefit of the Wort Chiller is speed. The quicker you cool your wort down the better. This is on two fronts. First you shorten the risk of exposure with a quick cool down and getting into your sealed fermenter asap. Second, stopping the creation of dimethyl sulfide. This happens...

How fast did you switch to AG?

I'll switch someday, but I'm not in a hurry. I'm happy with my process and my product.

    Problem with Auto-siphon suction

As a follow up, I had a flawless siphon last weekend moving my Nut Brown Ale to secondary. Thanks for the suggestions. I bought some new tubing (3/8in) and a hose clamp from HD. Not the one Revvy pictured, they didn't have those, but the screw tightened kind. Anyway, worked like a charm...

    Problem with Auto-siphon suction

Greetings, I've been lurking and search the site for a bit and I've yet to see a posting related to my particular problem. I've been losing a lot beer in my transfers and I think I finally pegged the siphoning as the culprit. I've been noticing a steadily increasing leak between the...
