    Boston Area Cider Makers

FYI Whole Foods has Carlson Farms (Harvard, MA) cider for sale $2 for a half gallon. It is pasteurized but I've had good success with it in the past.

    Boston Area Cider Makers

I'm new to the craft too! Only been at it for 3 years. Probably have 40 gallons under my belt with wildly variable results. Brandon O's graff is a great one though. I have my 4th batch in the primary now.

Anyone on here from the Boston Area? Might be nice to know who is in the neighborhood. Maybe we can compare notes locally!

    Scions

Mentioned Tower Hill Botanical Garden in a previous post, specifically their collection of pre 20 century cultivars. Here is their scion list: http://www.towerhillbg.org/thwebscion.html

Looking to Try New Yeasts other than Nottingham

Wildman, great info! I should have taken that lead class but never did. No longer contracting so just as well. This opens a world of opportunity ;)

Looking to Try New Yeasts other than Nottingham

Well, I dunno. I hear its not good practice to plan vegetables in the ground here in cities because of both lead paint contamination but also lead contamination left over from the days of leaded gas.

    Choice of yeast

I've used S-05 for two batches and the only problem I can say is that the crauzen is crazy! Just did another batch of Brandon O's this time with S-04 and for some reason, almost not crauzen. I'm wondering if that could be because I forgot to add yeast nutrient? Added some nutrient last night...

Looking to Try New Yeasts other than Nottingham

Sashurlow, I meant to ask if you have had any concerns regarding contamination in the apples? I know I probably sound like a chicken but thats the first thing that comes to mind when I see apples here close to the city. I'm over in Medford and along the Mystic there are a lot of great apple...

Looking to Try New Yeasts other than Nottingham

I had good success with the rootstock from Cummins Nursery. Made about 30 trees 4 years ago (could have been 5 years ago actually, loosing track of time). The scions came from a very old tree at my folks places that throws early apples (august) that are nice and tart. I'm hoping to get some...

    Newbie Hard Cider

Do a search on this forum for Graham's English Cider. Its pretty close to this recipe and there will be a lot in the thread regarding the addition of limes and black tea.

    My cider experience

I corked the cider from October today. I am really happy with the flavor. It has a good deal of that gamey/wild yeast thing going on. I don't know if that is a function of the wlp775 or some of the natural yeasts in the raw cider. It is a bit hazy and a few shades lighter than ginger...

How Much Sugar to Add for Bottle Carbonation

I made a batch of Brando O's Graff but forgot to take an OG. I now want to bottle it but I don't know what to do for carbonation. Do I add sugar and how much? I'm pretty clueless so thanks in advance for the help.

    My cider experience

Yeah, I'm guessing things can get really complicated with sweetening etc. I had and am having fun with it so I'll keep on with it! I used White Labs English Cider Yeast WLP775.

    My cider experience

Hello All, I've been lurking for a while but just started my second batch of cider so I thought I'd throw up a post. Last year I bought 5 gallons of cider from a local orchard. I placed the cider in a glass carboy, added camden tablets and waited 24 hours to add the yeast. I used Cote de...
