Mistake in The Craft of Stone Brewing

    That's a good question. I checked some of the others and here are the divergences: 13th = 0.6% ABV 9th = 1.3% (1.079->1.010 = 9.1% but they say 7.8%, on an imperial wheat) 8th = 0.1% 7th = 0.6% 6th = .4% stone smoked porter = 0.3% stone pale ale = 0.3% stone levitation = 0.2% So...

Mistake in The Craft of Stone Brewing

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1607740559/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 For big fans of Stone it's a must have. Makes a good coffee table book too. (though I still recommend reading parts of it - the history of how they got started is pretty interesting).

Mistake in The Craft of Stone Brewing

But it is mostly a function of the change in original density to final density isn't it? My impression was that ABV calculated from OG/FG might have say a 1-5% deviation from a lab test of alcohol level, but I wouldn't expect it to be 10% (error deviation from actual) like it is in this example...

Mistake in The Craft of Stone Brewing

Hi, So I purchased the new Stone brewery book. It's great! But there seems to be a mistake in the recipe for their 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. The beer was 9.2% ABV (stated in the book, and on their website http://www.stonebrew.com/12th/ale/) but the recipe says OG...

    Purchasing Oak Barrels/Casks

Hey, how did this turn out? Can you post an update? Do you still use the barrel? I'm thinking of buying a 5g barrel too, and using it initially for strong beers like stouts, barleywine, then souring it for lambics and Flemish ales. To Bobby_M who said these small barrels will contribute too...

kitchen sink hookup for immersion chiller

Cool, thanks! By the way, I found a user-submitted image on Amazon where a guy is using the fountain pump to chill his wort: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002HFTIY/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 [Edit: HBT truncates the Amazon link, so if you want to see the photo just search for "Sunterra...

kitchen sink hookup for immersion chiller

Hi mjohnson - if you're still around, I'd like to hear more about your aquarium pump solution. Was the pressure / flow rate good enough that you still get quick cooling? It seems like a pump would pump out water slower than a faucet does, but I guess that depends on how powerful it is. Also...

New brew pot spigot is leaking

Ok... I don't have any teflon tape. I wish they would say that on websites that are selling these brewpots. I doubt many people know they need to leak test the pot with hot water several days before brew day. Well, I'll try the teflon thing when I can get to Home Depot. I find it hard to...

New brew pot spigot is leaking

So I was all excited for the first brew with my new 9 gallon brew pot, and had the mash water at strike temp in it, when I noticed it's leaking from the spigot. It's coming from the threaded "close nipple", at the threaded joint on the brewpot (not at the point where the threading joins with the...

What's the benefit of a spigot on your brew pot?

Ah, thanks for the picture. I brew in my kitchen and my counters are about 1 foot higher than the top of my carboy, so I was imagining trying to shoot the wort out of the spigot and somehow have it end up arcing into the funnel would be pretty difficult. But I could raise the carboy on a box or...

What's the benefit of a spigot on your brew pot?

Ok... so I could run off the wort through the spigot straight into a carboy with funnel? How would I do that? The picture shows that the spigot is parallel to the ground - 90 degree angle off the brewpot. Is there some attachment that makes it go down? The website also offers a "hose barb" and...

What's the benefit of a spigot on your brew pot?

I'm thinking of upgrading from my 5g brew pot to a 9g one. Like this one: http://www.homebrewing.org/ONE-WELD-9-Gallon-Stainless-Steel-pot-_p_1683.html I've brewed 50+ batches, but I'm not really into the whole equipment obsession thing. I try to only buy stuff if I think it's going to...

    Effect of UV on krausen?

Yup, it came out fine. I guess the weird difference was due to a temperature gradient most likely.
