Not a half bad idea! After trying the "pour a gallon of water into a bottle" method and hoping that the tape stuck to the smooth glass surface, this actually looks a lot quicker and easier.

It reminded me of a story my grandfather once told me:
Thomas Edison was asked by a mathematician what the volume was of one of his light bulbs. This question was apparently asked to show Edison's lack of mathematical skills. Edison simply filled it with water and measured the volume with a graduated cylinder. Done.
I have no idea if this ever happened but it made an impression on me.
