I only have two Brews under my belt and both needed a blow off hose. Both batches were extract from Northern Brewer.

Besides fermentation temps how can i avoid very fierce fermentations?

Thanks

Different types of yeast can cause intense fermentation activity. From what I've read, dry yeasts tend to be quite aggressive. One thing that could help is having a little bit of extra head space in your primary. I almost always start out with a blow off tube until the krausen falls, just to be safe.

pitch at the right temps, top up the primary to just below the mark on the bucket.. or even lower and top up some more if you rack it again or when its done ferm...

I use 7.9 gallon buckets for five gallon batches and haven't needed a blow off tube.

How big is your fermenter?
I ask because when brewing my first batch, I assumed a 5 gallon batch should fit perfectly well in a 5 gallon carboy (lesson learned there). 5 gallon batches should probably be using at least a 6 gallon fermenter.

I find a 6.8 gallon bucket is big enough to hold the krausen from a 5 gallon batch most of the time. I've looked for a 7.8 gallon bucket at my LHBS, but neither one carried it, but you can find them online.

So you can:

- live with the overflow
- get a bigger bucket
- do smaller batches
