I need one now. My son has the flu and has been coughing all day. We've tried honey and some OTC kid medicines. Nothing is working. He's only eight, so we can't give him regular cough medicine. This poor kid can't stop coughing. Any ideas??

When I was. kid it was lemon zinger tea with honey and a bit of whiskey. Seemed to work, but not advocating alcohol to minors.

A vaporizer with some Vick's Vaporub in the mouth of it so the vapor picks it up and disperses it. Mom was a nurse and we always used this when we were kids. We used it on my kids too. It does a good job of relieving the symptoms.

+1 vaporizer

I bought one at CVS that has a little holding spot on top for an additional liquid they sell that's like menthol. The girlfriend who works in the hospital says one of her friends swears putting Vick's vapor rub in one of those candle wax warmers.

I'm partial to using the Neti pot if your nostrils are open. At least it will stop the mucus agitation.

+2 for vicks vapor rub (good warm bath before had helps too). Worked wonders on my son (4 years old) when he was sick. Just rubbed it on his chest and around his neck.

This may sound strange, but look it up on the web. I've tried it with good results. Which still baffles me. Vicks vapor rub on the bottom of the feet. Put socks on. Worst case, it won't hurt.

My mom used to do this to me and I swear it worked, but that may be because mom told me it would help? What I always have a problem with is the coughing, it keeps me awake. I started using essential oils in a vaporizer. It's basically the same idea as vicks in the vaporizer, but more potent. A few drops each of eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, peppermint, and lemon oils in a vaporizer and not only will your family love the smell but it will help your coughing. My whole family uses it now when they get sick or just have allergy problems. You can also use thieves oil which has been used for centuries in the same way. Thieves oil has cinnamon and clove in it and has MUCH stronger smell so I don't like it.

Also, Zinc has been proven to reduce the duration of the common cold. You can get Cold Eeze lozenges at the store that you take every couple of hours or so. The problem with zinc is that it will make you nauseous on an empty stomach and makes your mouth feel funny.
