I was grabbing supplies from LHBS and while chatting in front of the cooler with owner about yeast, he pointed me to the "free" rack in the cooler where there were about 8-10 WL vials of various strains. All of them were a few months out of date and free. He said he has used them for SMaSH and other experiments and told me to take as many as I wanted, I grabbed a vial of American Lager, basically I wanna know how active and effective will they be? Maybe good for a 2 gallon SMaSH?

They will be fine, just make a starter. Revvy had a good article awhile back about some scientists who revived some 3000 year old yeast that were on an ancient beer pot and made beer with it.

Thats awesome to know. I had never noticed the tray labled free, he said theres usually a few, should make for some cheap 2 gallon SMaSH brews!
