So on my continuing quest to better my beer I am making my first yeast starter tonight for a beer I am brewing this weekend. It is an IPA that's target OG is 1.074. Mr malty says that a 1.5L starter on a stir plate will make it happen.

So I went out and got a 2L Erlenmeyer flask and a couple of parts that I did not have laying around to finish my stir plate build.

So the questions are,

Should I boil the stir bar with the wart?

and

I read I should be OK boiling my wort right in the flask on my gas range, is this correct?

Yes both are ok. Just be ready with an oven mitt to pull it because boilovers are super easy in a flask.

Cool. Thanks. Hopefully having 1.5L in a 2L flask will help with not having a boilover, but I'll be sure to watch it closely.

I also have read conflicting opinions on yeast food. I have some laying around should I use it?
