Thought I'd share but I was invited to try last years batch of probably best RIS out there. Kate the great. I know know why it is considered one of the best in the world. Cheers.

Err who said it was one of the best in the world? Not busting your balls or anything; I'm legitimately curious. Always on the look out for great beers, but I don't think I've heard of this one before.

No offense taken. This beer has been in my area for years until recent when the master brewer left. But it used to be brewed once a year in limited amounts. A lottery was held to even more make it tougher to get. Anyhoo. Beer advocate and other major reviewers claim it to be one of the best. I'd share links but I'm on my phone. Look it up and see what you can find.

Yeah I see it on BA as having 100 BA score and 100 Bros score, with 811 votes and isn't even brewed anymore. Old Rasputin only has 96 and 97 but has 6,992 reviews and is still in production. To me having a score of world class doesn't mean it's one of the best in the world.

Especially if it takes an act of God to score a bottle......

The master brewer took the recipe and the name. Good news is that he's building a brewery close to my house. Also he states to brew this beer 4 times a year and make it more accessible to the public. Beer geek nation also say this is world class. I'll post more reputable reviews later. But I know this is better than any other RIS I have had.

...I would think being scored "world class" means exactly that it's one of the best beers in the world...

Not really, if I get 10 of my friends or 100 locals to rate my beer solid 5's on BA just to boost my rAvg. For example, this world class RIS that has been rated by...21 people...and doesn't even have a photo. Not completely reputable in my opinion.

It sounds like the brewery took a loss when the brewer left. Do you know what the name of the new brewery will be called? I'd like to check it out when it opens up.

Todd's kept it hush. But the town approved everything I think he's just locking down the perfect building for it. I'll update as time goes on.

Your point is true, and I agree. However, 811 votes is a large cross section, and more than a lot of surveys use. Regardless, it's still all subjective-if a person hates stouts, than they'll hate this, no matter its score.

Anyway, this is all ot, as op didn't make this thread to argue what world class means.

He didn't. He said it was considered one of the best in the world, and I asked by who, to which he cited Beer Advocate. If he would have brought up Michael Jackson I would have asked for an article or a book reference. Some opinions matter more to me than others.

100% not relevant. The world class score is exactly that, a designation as a world class beer. You can dispute the opinion of the judges, but it's availability has absolutely nothing to do with it's merit per the bjcp standards.

BJCP standards have nothing to do with BA ratings. Take a look at the top rated beers on BA and you'll see that availability factors pretty heavily in scoring, on the other hand. Not saying this one isn't amazing, I've never had it and likely never will, given the rarity. I'm just saying, people tend to inflate their scores on rare and low production beers, whether they consciously intend to or not.

No, they are the gold standard in judging beer though, but my post was 100% accurate without me invoking them. So leave that part out. I'm still right.

In fact, edited.

Haters around here just hating. Let someone enjoy their damn beer.

I've never had the beer either, but you know every single one of you is curious. Looks beautiful, and delicious OP. F#$k the haters.

I stand by my statement. Rarity factors into scoring. One beer in the top 20 right now is generally widely available at any given time (Rochefort 10). Everything else is either limited release or only available in the general vicinity of the brewery (HT, PtE, Zombie Dust).

Oh, and I'm not hating. I'm just saying BA scores are not the definitive answer on a beer.

WHA???? You mean that a bunch of anonymous self-proclaimed beer geeks on the internet, writing rambling and sometimes conflicting reports aren't the end-all, be-all review of a beer's relative merit!?!

Next thing you'll tell me is that all of those Amazon reviews aren't legitimate!:p

this is spot on....I'm willing to bet that when KtG goes to 4x/year distribution its score will come down in BA.

Although maybe not, since its rep. has already been established.

Sorry to cause a debate. Although I do like a good debate now and again. Perhaps I should have left out that it was considered a world class beer. I thought it was from my half assed research through out the years this beer has been around. But in any case I'm glad it sparked some interest. Cheers.

You have no apologies to make. This place is always gonna be this way. It really doesn't matter how carefully you craft every word of a post, somebody is gonna get their panties in a twist. I've never had the beer, but the picture makes it look DELICIOUS! Stoked for you.

Well they did keep it civil so that's cool. Thanks man. I tried for so long to try this and failed every time the lottery came around. I can't compare it to other RIS for I haven't had one that comes even close. I'd do a review but I'd botch it and would do it justice. Like I said I'll keep people updated for when Todd's brewery opens. Hopefully people outside of Seacoast can try it.

It always amazes me when somebody posts to a discussion forum and they are surprised that their post causes a discussion. What did you expect to happen? What did you want to happen?

Not surprised. As long as it's clean. Just wasn't expecting it I guess. The post was intended to just share that I had an awesome RIS.

In regards to Tod Mott's new brewery and KTG. Tod kept the recipe but not the name, it will be called something else. The new brewery will be called Tributary Brewing, and looks like it will be in Kittery, ME. The brewery space and equipment will be shared with a local wine maker (no idea what his name is or what his winery will be called). Supposedly opening sometime in 2014. Don't know how often the former KTG will be brewed, but one story in a local paper said it will be one of three or four flagship beers. Don't know about how hush he is being either. I've read several articles in local papers about this.

I talked with the Portsmouth brewery while I was enjoying my ktg and they said he got the name to as of recent. I can't wait to have a solid brewery within walking distance... sigh
