I'm in the market for a fermentation chamber. I was looking at the Igloo 4.6cu ft mini fridge that Walmart has on sale right now for $119, but one of these bad boys showed up on Craigslist ($100 asking price):

Thing is, I haven't seen anybody talk about converting one of these (Frigidare upright freezers) into a fermentation chamber (or kegerator). It looks pretty much ideal 11cu FT and if I'm not mistaken the shelves don't have the coils and are removable.

Any reason I should hesitate on this if it works? Lister says it's about 10 years old and works fine. I may offer him a little less. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Now you have seen one... My Frigidaire with a Johnson Controls temp controller does just fine. A schwartzbier is currently fermenting away at about 50 degrees F... Make sure that whatever size vessels you plan to use fit in the model you are looking at.

Well, that was quick. Thanks a bunch for that. I would be happy being able to do a single 6.5gal bucket, which I'm sure it's got plenty of room for. If I end up being able to stick another bucket or even a small carboy in there as well that'd be icing.

Thanks again.

I have a 14CF frigidaire upright (FFU14F5H), and it is great. I can fit two 6.5 gallon carboys on the floor (just barely). Don't know about that model, but mine has the controller in the door, which made installing a love controller up front nice and easy.

If you are happy with the size, I say go for it. That price is great if it is in good condition.
