I am making a yeast starter for my next batch. Activly bubbling only after about 5 hours.... absolutly no foaming though. I thought the foaming up was normal with active fermentation..... maybe need more time....? I mean there is NOTHING. The yeast I am using is WLP004. The Irish ale yeast.

give it time. for the first 5 hours, the yeast were multiplying. once the bubbles started, that's the sign that they are starting to ferment your starter wort. It will foam in due time.

However, it may not foam very much, and it may happen so fast that you never actually see it. The first starter I made... I never saw foam, but I knew it worked because I had an inch of yeast on the bottom of my bottle.

Made one with the same yeast on Wed., same thing. Pitched like 15 hours later and boom almost immediate action. The starter showed little activity and I was sweating it until I got up and looked at the carboy in the morning, it was cooking.

Yeah theres a lot of yeast on the bottom thats for sure. Hmmm... cool. I just thought cause I was new to starters that something was up. Thanks much!
