Opened my brew closet the other day and found this nasty, moldy surprise at the bottom of my bottling bucket. Toss it or do you think it's salvageable?

I'd probably pitch it. I'd rather not risk infection of a bunch of bottles over a $5 bucket.

However, if you're feeling adventurous, you could oxyclean soak it, bleach bomb it, then sanitize. It would PROBABLY be okay, but that's up to you.

As long as those mold spots aren't in scratches I'd give it a good hot soak in oxyclean and then sanitize as usual.

I don't know where these $5 buckets are (in 6.5g size anyway). I can't find them for ANY cheaper than $10.

Yeah - 6.5 gallon ones aren't $5. I use a regular 5 gallon for my bottling bucket. The last 2 6.5 gallon buckets I bought were $16!

Cean it. That which you can see are but tiny islands among a vast sea of microbes. And is no more than a indication of either not drying them well enough or a high humidity storage area. The reality is, the very same spores that bloomed those spots are likely covering everything else in the same area, just had no residue to feed on.

I got two for $31 shipped, with lids and airlocks. From Bells General Store. Cheapest I've seen. LHBS sells just buckets for $16.50

I want to learn more about these multi molecular organisms that can fit into an area that is smaller than a molecule of bleach may fit.

If its just a bottling bucket, clean it. If you plan to ferment in it, clean it Really well.

Or if you're worried about using it for bottling, congratulations, you now have a new bucket to store pre-mixed star-san solution!

Clean then sanitize or donate it to the garage for washing your car or to the garden as a compost bucket.

Cold Water and Oxyclean and a sponge to get the big stuff, Rinse
Cold Water and Oxyclean, soak in and leave it for a while.
Hot Water and rinse
BOILING warer and Starsan that just cover the mold
Later add warmwater to the top and let it sit.

Mark the container and use... if you have any problems toss it.

what's with all of the panic? chuck the thing if you want but there is nothing wrong with that bucket, it's mold not evil spirits. jeez.
