So, in the latest edition of BYO mag, responding to a question about how to measure the additional IBUs of a FWH addition, the editor responded by saying that, while the First Wort Hopping will add approx a 10% hop utilization to the beer, it will actually DECREASE the perceived bitterness of the beer. So, my question is: what's the point of FWHing?

I've only used Perle and German noble hops as a fwh. I definitely did notice a boost in hop flavor. the bitterness was smooth, but it always is with those. I did not notice an increase in overall bitterness (perceived IBU).
I would say it's one of those things that will depend on the style of beer & which hops & how much you use, etc. try it in a beer you've made many times & see if you can tell a difference.

In my experience, FWH additions give more hop flavor and a less harsh bitterness than 60 minute boil additions of the same recipe. I like to do FWH additions for heavily hopped recipes where I want to highlight the hop flavors and aromas without it becoming heavily bitter in the finish.

It also tends to help with boilovers. Throwing your bittering hops into boiling wort is always an exciting experience.
