Hi All,

I know this is my first post but I'd like everyone's opinion on whole leaf hops.

I've messed with the pellet hop muck for quite awhile now. I just did my first whole hop batch and the way they filtered the cold and hot break to produce crystal clear wort I'm wondering why they don't get more attention.

I've read about people trying to get clearer wort using different methods but hardly ever read of using leaf hops as a natural filter bed with either a false bottom or bazooka screen or the like. Just wondering what you all think?

I don't have a hop strainer. But I siphon out of my brew kettle.

I don't know that my beers end up more clear, I brew on the dark side. I have noticed that I end up with less sediment in the primary and very little in my bottles.

I will let you know this weekend. IT will be my first AG and it will be the first time using my bazooka screen. I use whole hops for most of my stuff.

I only use whole leaf hops and yes they create a great filter bed for the break material. I use a false bottom and siphon in my boil kettle and it's definetly better than dealing with pellet sludge. Welcome to the forum TB .

I use whole hops and a false bottom in the kettle. It does a great job on the hot break, but I use a CFC so the cold break goes into the fermenter.

However, this method really sucks when you forget to put the false bottom in.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one using leaf hops and finding it a great way to use hops.

You guys that have been doing this longer (whole hops) have you tried adding pellets in the same batch. If so does the filter bed hold up and filter all of the pellet gunk?

Perfect, thats exactly what I wanted to hear. So does anyone use any kind of a ratio.

For example if I use 1 oz. of whole hops but 2 oz of pellets would it still work or would 2 oz leaf to 1 oz pellets be better. Just asking because I've never done both.

Cheers,
