I don't have a local homebrew shop, where is the best place online to get grain?

Northern Brewer and MoreBeer are good options.

You can buy from MoreBeer, however, there is a shipping charge on the large 50-55lb sacks. Many people (including myself when there is a 17% sale) buy the more expensive 10lb bags from MoreBeer that ship free.

You need to be careful when buying. Last week I received a 55lb sack of Dingemans Pilsner from Northern Brewer that cost, including shipping, only $68.99. The same sack from MoreBeer was $55.99 plus $25.08 shipping for a grand total of $81.07.

I try to buy from my LHBS when possible. Lately, I have been buying from Northern Brewer. I buy from MoreBeer only when there is a sale.

I bought a 50 pound sack on Amazon a month or so ago for $65 with free shipping. The Morebeer deal with 10 pounders is actually cheaper though.

Northern brewer has free shipping on orders over 125$, just buy grain by the pound instead of the sack price is what I do. Allows me to buy partial sacks of a couple different things. Last time I ordered I got a free pound of hops on top of free shipping using two coupon codes.

Disregard it looks like northern brewer has raised their base malt per pound prices SIGNIFICANTLY. I was buying from them around ~1$ for base and specialty grains. Guess they caught on ‍♂️

If you have a local brewery, see if they'll sell you a bag or add one to their next order. A local group here has been doing bulk buys through a small brewery and I just paid $32/bag. Marris Otter was $44.

Next best price I've paid shipped was from MoreBeer. You'll have to pay shipping but they seem to get a lot better rates than any of the small guys.

HomebrewFinds frequently has deals advertised for 50 & 55 lb bags of grain. I just checked there now and there was a link to an Amazon listing for a bag of Briess 2-row for $64 with free shipping. They also had links to MoreBeer listings of Viking malt 55 lb bags for $39.99. Shipping was just under $20, or free shipping if you splurge and buy $150 worth of stuff.

A cursory search tells me 50 lbs + online don't play well together.
As mentioned, there are places that offer free shipping if you're order is large enough. It takes some digging.
I looked up Briess 2 row - 50 lb.
Amazon with "free" shipping - $64.11
Northern / Midwest in-store - $33.99 + ($43.35 if shipped)

I'm wondering if a weekend road trip might pay dividends for you. How far away is a LHB store?

Once again, (as with another thread on a different topic) your "internet" seems to be different than my "internet".
My NB lookup did NOT reveal this. I suspect a conspiracy..:D:D
Can I ask you to do my shopping for me? You seem trustworthy. I'll give you my credit card.....

Still... In store is obviously cheaper, and I wonder if the OP could make an outing of it.

I've been buying from NB for awhile. I buy from my LHBS when possible and from MB when there is a sale. NB prices do not go on sale as you will see their everyday prices on sacks of grains are hard to beat.

Thank you for the compliment! Those that know me, would agree with you and vouch of my reputation and trustworthiness.

last month I scored 80c/lb Viking pale at MoreBeer in 10lb bags, free shipping. First batch is going into a keg tomorrow.

I got curious reading this thread and had to take a look at NB. They are beating my local prices for full sacks with free shipping included. And no tax. And huge selection. My local guys are lucky if they have more than 4-5 varieties of base malt available NB seems to have 10 different Pilsner malts available. Only downside I see is estimated 10 calendar days for delivery.

I agree with some of the posts above. I typically buy 10-lb bags at Morebeer, and I spend over $59 to get free shipping. If you don't need it right away, you can wait for a 10-15% sale. I prefer 10-lb bags over 50-lb sacks because it's easier to store.

Midwest has good per-pound prices (about $1/lb for Briess 2-row), free shipping over $99, and they consistently have sales (right now I think it's 15% off). My recollection is that you just have to be over $99 before the coupon code, so you can buy 100 lbs for $85 with free shipping. I don't like their packaging as much - when I ordered 20 lbs of 2-row, it was scooped into a single bag rather than broken out in 10-lb increments. But some people may prefer that.

With both sites, you can also mix and match instead of getting 50+ pounds of a single grain.

Yeah, that looks pretty good...

And if you need storage the 60 lb Vittles Vault is on sale.

If you knew what you wanted and your lhbs does not carry it would they be willing to order you a sack at a good price? My closest shop will do that for me on liquid yeasts that she does not normally carry. I just have to give her a week to order and receive it.

I usually order 55 pound sacks of base malts from NB to get the free shipping, then add smaller amounts of specialty malts as needed to hitchhike on the shipping.

Northern Brewer sent me a 10% off coupon, 55 pound sack for $50.49 with free shipping, not a bad price!
