I have quite a few quick disconnects on my brewing system and they all are the type where you squeeze a couple handles on each side to seal the connection.

Each handle had a stainless o-ring like you'd see on a key chain and one of the two o-rings per disconnect had a cotter-like pin on it. I left these on for years before having a light bulb moment and taking them all off.

Do they in fact serve some to me unseen purpose?

My brewing system in on a wire rack cart, the cotter pin is handy to hang a loose hose or for keep the end off the ground.

There are holes near the pivot point of the lever and the cotter pin can be put there to prevent the lever from completely opening up. I suppose to prevent it from accidentally opening up if something caught the lever.
