Hi all. Just getting started down the road of homebrewing and I am making 5 gallon batches (approximately). I keg my beer so I was wondering what do you do with the leftover beer that does not fit into the corny keg if the batch is a little bit bigger than 5 gallons?

Eric

how come you end up with leftover beer????? mine seems to be evaporating every time Im nearby. :tank:

well, on the serious note, I bottle my stuff and with the "leftovers" - usually the last few bottles - I bottle into white 0.33 glass bottles just to see how it progresses clearing wise/color/taste - making meself a nice little "samplers" :mug:

Thanks for the replies. I am going to start collecting some bottling equipment so that I don't have to waste too much beer.
Maybe I'll use it as a stock for a soup. Last weekend my wife and I went out for dinner and I had a Guinness onion soup. I was very good, cooking with the extra beer sounds like a great idea. Thanks

I just started using those carbonation pellets. 1 per bottle and it's supposed to carbonate it in a couple days. Haven't cracked one open yet, but if it works, I plan on bumping my batch size a bit so I can some bottles to share. Also, I only had enough out of my last batch for ONE beer, talk about not wanting to waste any!!

Stick it in a bottle in the fridge. When the keg has room, toss it in.

Or, get one of those carbonator caps and force carb it right im the bottle, and then drink it. (Edit: Roger beat me to it.)

"Leftover beer"... that's not a valid concept! :p

I make a loaf of beer bread with every batch I brew, kinda a tradition I started a few months back with my first batch. So if nothing else, bottle a little up for some fun. ( I usually make mine at the in bottle three week mark - lets me open a bottle and test for carb before putting into the fridge )

( BTW - all you need is 12oz room temp beer mixed into 3 sifter cups of self rising flour and 1/4 cup sugar. Spoon over into a greased pan, pop in oven for 1 hour at 375 - a voila! - it's pretty doggone tasty at it's worst, right doggone wonderful at it's best - and every beer makes a different tasting bread of course! )

Boil the alcohol out of it and feed it to your dog. From what I've gathered hop toxicity is uber rare and as long as you're not giving them like a gallon of quintuple IPA or something like that.
