What is this piece attached to my regulator?

I have had the same regulator (TapRite series 740) for years. I always assumed that this piece that came with my regulator was a check valve, but now that I took it off and looked at it closely, I realized that I don't know why it's on there. It has a spring-loaded button that releases pressure. Do I need this on there?

Now I am wanting to add a T so that I can use a second line to transfer from primary fermenting kegs. I'm having some difficulty because most of my fittings are 1/4", but the out side of my shutoff valve is 3/8". I'm trying to avoid spending so much on the fittings, because it seems like they can easily add up to the price of a new regulator. If I swap out my existing shutoff valve (1/4" male to 3/8" female), I can avoid the need for adapters. I'm probably overthinking all of this, but what is the simplest and least expensive way to do this? Most of the shutoff valves I see online are barb fittings, and I need 1/4" on each side.

Thanks

It's probably just a pressure relief valve or something to stop liquid from flowing into your gauge. I don't know too much about them, I just know how to hook it up and drink my beer.

You took it off?!?! Its broken forever!

Just kidding. My pressure relief is attached and goes off at 50 psi I believe. My guess is that is relatively similar.

LOL... thanks for the replies. I don't know what pressure it's rated for. I just haven't noticed them on many other regulator setups I've seen.

Just turn up the gas until it begins hissing. That is the pressure it is set for. My regulators from KegConnection came set up for 60 PSI.
