Creating a SmuttyNose IPA clone for a 5 gallon batch, extract and would like to know what LME would be comparable to Pale Malt 2 Row grain. I'm new to the home brewing world so any suggestions would be great.

Would something like Alexander's (USA) Pale Malt Extract be it?

Thanks

2-row pale malt is the generic base grain that most brewer's use.

Almost any light colored extract for sale out there is going to have been made using that kind of grain.

I wouldn't use Alexander's as it is less fermentable than some others. I would go with briess, northwestern, muntons, or something similar. Light or gold extract is what you want.

I asked the same thing to my LBHS a while back. They said their pale Malt Extract is eqivelant to a 2 row pale Malt grain. But they just take my small bucket and put in as much as I need. If you are buying it canned be sure to check if its pre-hopped or not.

SmuttyNose IPA?! I love SmuttyNose!!

I tried with this:

Speciality Grains:
16 oz Crystal 50/60
8 oz Carapil
8 oz Munich 10

Malt:
6# Amber LME
1# "Golden Light" DME

Hops: 4.0 oz Simcoe
0.5 @60
0.5 @40
1.0 @20
1.0 @ 0
1.0 Dryhopped 7 days

Yeast: 1056

And it came out outstanding!!

Very Cool. SmuttyNose is great. I love the IPA and second favorite is the B A IPA. I just took a tour of there brewery this past Saturday. I talked to one of the brewers about the recipe for the IPA and he told me the following:

Pale malt 2 row
Smidgen of Crystal 60

Magnum for bittering
Simcoe every 5 mins after 30 mins
whirlpool Santiam and centennial
dry hop amarillo.

White labs California yeast

I'm working in Beersmith to come up with a recipe.

Guys/Gals - Thank you all for all your suggestions.

Nice hops combo!!

I had to tinker because now you got me craving. I came up with this:

That 8.42 of LME is not very friendly..... Maybe an 6# LME and a 2# pale DME?
