I'm a slug.... I didn't do it.
Sorry no help. I hear people put out BMC to kill slugs, it just takes longer to kill people.
Still no help here. I'll go to bed now.
Tom

You can look for a slime trail if it's slugs. Could also be an animal like possum, skunk, or deer.

I did find a snail trail but there was no damage around it, the areas with damage seemed unlikely for a snail to get to, I guess it could be that ****** squirrel that lives in the area, no big animals are getting in my yard though.

I think I had cut worms last year. This happened several time and was very frustrating.

If you think that's horrible take a look at what I found eating out some of my leaves. It looked like a small wood stick with very ugly teeths... I looks like a thing from out of a Alien movie...:confused:

That looks like insect damage to me. A rabbit or deer would browse it a lot closer to the ground. It's a little tough without zooming in, but the bites in the plant also look like they match insect damage.

There a lot of organic solutions to keep pests away.

- You can do some companion planting around your hops (like marigolds). There are lot of companion plants that keep pests away, and I can dig out a complete list if you like.

- You can make an organic pesticide and give your plants a light coat.

- You can definitely kill slugs and snails with beer. Place a shallow dish in the soil so that the lip of the dish is even with the soil level, and pour in some BMC. Works like a charm.

If you need more ideas or want more info on something, I can get off my ass and get out my organic gardening book.

I would suspect a caterpillar. They hide under the leaves or in some other nearby shade.

If you are lucky, it (the caterpillar) was plucked off by a bird or a dauber (have seen them do that). If not, it will likely be back for a late night snack.
