Just got a keg for keggle conversion from a local HTBer in College Station. As of now nothing has been done to it, but I am hoping to get welded fittings. The problem is I don't know how to weld and have had trouble getting local welders to call me back.

Does anyone know of a decent welder they could recommend who doesn't charge an arm and a leg? It would be nice to get a plasma cutter to take off the top, but I can do that myself with a grinding wheel if needed.

If you want to save some $ then cut the top off yourself. Get a angle or die grinder and a $2 cutting wheel. Cut the holes for the fittings yourself and make sure the holes are cleaned up and ready to weld. Then....... Take it down to the community college. They usually charge $15 an hour. Since you've done all the prep it will only take 10 min to weld.

I know all this because I am the poorest man in western washington.

I live in College Station and have a wire welder w/SS wire, though my Argon/CO2 tank is currently empty (hey, I need to refill it anyway). I'm not sure what welding you need done, but you're more than welcome to come by and give it a shot. Or I could take a stab myself (for free), but must issue a disclaimer.

While I'm experienced at welding both with my MIG and an arc welder, I have little/no experience welding SS. I also only have minimal experience welding thing gauge metal (anything thinner than, say, tailpipes). So I can't promise anything on the quality of the welds. But I'll bet we can make it work.

You may be having problems getting welders to call you back because it's such a small job. Keep on them, or actually go by in person with your keg. If you catch someone free they may just do it real quick.
